No power uphill

Postby KO6SY » Sun 25.04.2010, 01:05

It feels like the boost is not working and this is especially noticeable on an uphill run so here is an ElanScan to see if one of you experts can figure out what is going on for me.

Many Thanks

if you put up the boost over time graph...you can see that you have 5 gear changes and that youre getting about 0.62 bar.....
what does your problem actually seem to be...without the use of elan scan I mean.....

what is wrong....what has changed to make you notice this.....etc etc etc......

With max boost uphill it felt like I was losing speed and in fact when I came off the boost the car did speed up. The uphill section is at 110sec into the drive. You see the engine speed up from a stationary start and then the engine speed doesn't increase above 4000 revs in 3rd gear ( I don't get out of 3rd gear)
When I looked at the ElanScan it seemed like a very high number of "knock" events.

Yes I'd agree about the knock events. Note that at those knock events (~110secs) there is consderable knock retard applied (up to 7.5 degrees).
There are a couple of other things of note:
1. The engine coolant appears to be hot 95.5 - 105.5 C
If you leave X-Axis at time and then select the 2 Curve parameters as Coolant Temp and Knock Counter you'll see what I mean.
Are you sure your thermostat is opening? I thought normal temp was 80 C and the coolant fans kick at 100 C
2. The timing advance at idle appears to be low (5 - 10 degrees)

I am fairly sure the thermostat is opening as the coolant does cool down once I am not asking for power and start cruising. The temp comes up if I am stationary.
The outside temperature yesterday was 75F (Live in Southern California)

Coolant temps?

Postby tigerdog » Sun 25.04.2010, 20:10

I haven't looked at the scan just yet, but if the coolant temps are that high, something odd is happening. I can only compare against my car; at 75F outside, full throttle/boost uphill in 4th does not cause an appreciable increase in temperature here. Airflow through the radiator seems to be sufficient. Do you hear the cooling fans kick in when the temp reaches approx 3/4 mark on the gauge? Also, does the coolant temp spike as soon as you apply boost? Are you losing coolant or are there any dreaded bubbles and/or brown muck visible in the coolant overflow bottle? I'll see if I can glean more from the scan but that requires a little extra jiggery/pokery with multiple computers here, so it may be a bit before I can comment again.

When you look at the Scan the 100second point is when I am stationary at the bottom of the hill at traffic lights and the temp is starting to climb, I have seen it do this when stationary, the fans do come on though and cool it down. The temp continues to rise as I go up the hill with 100% throttle.
I will have to check the coolant. This all seems to have happened after taking it in for the timing belt change so I could take it back as it is probably related to timing.

WOT in third gear at 4000RPM and 0.6Bar boost should be accelerating you, hill or no hill. Given the knocking, I'd say the first things to check are the base timing and the belt alignment; I seem to remember someone had a belt replaced one tooth out and it made quite a difference.

I found a non existant PCV valve - could have been damaged during the timing belt change.
The hose was causing the "hissing" noise during boost but now I have to see if I can find the valve locally, managed to hold the hose onto the crank case to stop the hissing, but still need the valve.

Would this be causing my problem?

Noticed a couple of posts in the forum on lack of power at 4000rpm and it being related to a stuck waste gate. Will this show up on Elanscan?

A stuck waste gate is generally manifest as overboost resulting in the ECU entering safe mode (with check-engine light coming on). Elandscan should readily measure the boost climbing too high (although a glance at your boost gauge should generally tell you the same thing).

Unless the wastegate is stuck open, at which point boost never reaches max. Since you're seeing .62 in ElanScan, it means you're making boost but not overboosting. If the valve is stuck, it's not stuck closed. Best thing to do is practice the wastegate wiggle. Even before doing this, you can, with a cold engine, try grasping the actuator rod and moving it back and forth to feel for sticktion. Sometimes this motion is enough to free things if they're not badly stuck. Personally, I exercise mine on every drive through copious application of the right foot.

But what if it was stuck open or even slightly open?

I think you may well still have either a stuck-open wastegate actuator or perhaps another pressure leak in the intake tract. One thing I noticed that seemed out of place in the scan: in both time periods wherein you have full boost, the wastegate duty cycle spikes when the boost goes up, but then drops back even though the boost is still up. I am not an expert, but it seems, if the boost is up, the wastegate should have to keep cycling to avoid overboost. Since it does not, it makes me think the gate is not closing fully or there's another leak in the system that keeps the boost from building beyond the numbers shown. anyone else care to comment?
