hey folks, I have to get into the tank to repair the fuel sender potentiometer since it generally tells me I have a very full tanl all the time. I cannot find my manual to see what it suggest when it comes to removing the ring at the top of the tank. any suggestions on the best, safest, easiest way to do this? is there a specific tool? thanks in advance.

When i did mine, i just marked it's current position, relative to both the tank and the lid with tippex, then used a wooden stick as a drift and a rubber mallet to turn the locking ring enought to further undo it by hand.
Make sure it is as clean as you can get it, otherwise debris will fall into the tank.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

It may just be the float that's stuck and they have been unstuck with some gentle tapping.

It seems to be the float. It was full then worked when at half. I think there must be a build up on the potentiometer hence why I want to get in there and clean it...gently ofcourse...and make sure the thing isn't getting stuck on anything.

There is a breather pipe at the top of the tank. If this works its way in the float arm gets stuck on top of it (hence allways full). Try pulling the pipe out a little before disassembling the tank you could save yourself hours.
