Rusty Chassis

I've desided to give my self a kick up the bum and try and sort the chassis out.

Has any one used this company before http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/index.html

Or does any one know of a company that offers the same service?

I've been quoted for a full chassis and a month turn around:-

Stripping cost £320.00

Electrophoretic coat additional £620.00

Bare in mind I would still like the Chassis painting inside and out.

Have you considered having the chassis hot dipped galvanized a friend of mine did his Spitfire chassis and the distortion which is the main worry was minimal but he did have to clean all the mounting holes and run a tap down all the threaded holes but at least the problem of rust has gone or at least minimised.

But a lot of companies just don't seem intrested or don't get back to you. The above mentioned company seem proffessional and maintain good communications.

saying that... I came by a free chassis the other month... so it could be ideal to experiment with...I'm all a sixes and sevens..Pros and cons and all that...

May be use the above company to strip it and Bristol to galvanize it...

I know exactly what you mean, I have the same issues from time to time, "we'll call you back" sometimes they do but for the most part they do not.

I am quite lucky as I know a local company that will strip the body and another (Acrow Galvanizing) that does galvanising, all within 15miles in fact the galvanising company is less than 1.5 miles away not bad for a small market town.
If I was undertaking this job I would get the chassis galvanised as the level of protection far exceeds that of any other coating and it tends to build up on edges and corner which is a good thing. Plus galavanising is bonded metallurgically to the steel, if the damaged area is large, the sacrificial protection prevents the sideways creep of rust which can undermine paint coatings. The only down side is heat distortion but if the company has done this type of work before and their tanks are large enough then this can be minimised by the way they put the chassis in the tank and cool it after.

for those that dont want to strip the car down and remove the chassi .
but still want to stop the rust on the chassi what rust stoping/ painting treatments are the best options.
i have in the past used hammerite on a bug floorpan and the results did not last that long before flaking scraching off.
so would u use a rust stoper
then say por51 currenly ot of stock in 500ml tins at frosts
or black waxoil or as the mad man a few doors down says brush it with dirty engine oil mate

51 is 36 too many I think you mean POR-15.
500ml is a big tin too. It's not like paint as it bonds to ANYTHING including the tin lid, then you'll have to wreck it with a pair of pliers to get it open again...which is why they sell packs of small tins. When re-sealing the tin, use at least 2 layers of cling film between tin & lid.

Used Engine oil? Better than salty air, but it is acidic so I would choose waxoil.
BTW, the chassis is grey so you may prefer clear Waxoyl...or Dinitrol which dries 'a bit' instead of staying wet.

May be the "POR-15 Super Starter Kit” Link to one site, may be the way to go as it gives you not only the paint but all the prep stuff as well. Preparation is the key to a good job and in this instance the preparation is important as it neutralises the rust giving a good surface for the paint.

if you figure out postage ( ) i have a complete chassis on the east coast of USA that is not rusty.

I'm using Bilt Hamer products as I was VERY disappointed with the Hammerite products - I'll post some post-Hammerite pics later - not a pretty sight.
