I'm no expert but I don't think you can assume that the performance will automatically be better
across the entire rev range with a large bore exhaust, and in 'general' if the exhaust bore increases
you sacrifice lower rpm torque for higher rpm torque, so there is a sensible compromise depending
on how you drive the car. :-D

Whether this has any appreciable effect going from 2.25" - 2.5" I don't know but I would have thought
that 2.5" is on the large size for an engine of the Elans capacity and rev range?

Do we have any objective data from Elanscan to see what's actually happening to engine power when
someone has measured a before and after going from standard to 2.25" and 2.5" :?:

I have spoke to Peco owners who find that their exhaust sounds too aggressive & can be a bit too boomy when cruising at speed.
Piper doesn't suffer from this. It has a nice, low purr during normal driving. It gets louder when you floor it though.
Piper also do a second silencer as an off-the-shelf option. Peco will do similar on request but I believe that their system is louder with it than Piper's is without.

Hey Mr, I quite like my peco! when driving down country roads its growl is fantastic and with the roof down it is spot on. Only down side is roof up at 70 on a motorway it can drone a little. (did we buy these cars to sit on a motorway all day?)
Plus i like scaring the old ladies at bus stops! Also it can be used to show anoyance at other peoples bad driving/ let people know your there. The list is endless hehe :-D

If anybody is interested, I am having various upgrades done to my car and the chap doing the work tested the car before starting to see how much power it had, for a comparison.

I am not much of an expert with cars, but will write about the work undertaken in more detail, the prices and the people who did the work in the minor projects section. It is worth a read, because, if you did this work yourself, for £1100 we just hit 245 BHP at the flywheel, 222 at the wheels! :-D

All without the need for bigger Turbos, re plumbing, ECU, larger injectors, bigger intercoolers etc. whilst still maintaining safe limits and not using suspect devices like fuel cut defenders etc.

Add in a custom built down pipe (currently underway) and this should give 250BHP, with even better drivability

I haven’t driven it yet, but the builder said there is virtually no torque steer or lag whatsoever! He is used to building big CC cars to 800 BHP+ and even he was impressed!

The only upgrades before starting, for performance gains, was the Quicksilver exhaust. This is on a totally standard 1990 SE without a Cat, 21700 miles and in need of a service!

The starting BHP was 199 BHP at the flywheel 172 BHP on the road....not bad for a 2” exhaust without the excessive noise and the need to port the waste gate.

And apparently, it was not as bad (the Quicksilver) as I was led to believe.....maybe it was my original fitter making excuses?

I posted it in the Turbo/Boost and Intake section, you won't be disappointed! :-D
