Using naught but a simple leak-style MBC, Smaug is pushing better than 14PSI around 3000rpm and reaches 17 by 4000. Boost begins building around 2500. Gt2560R ball bearing turbo. Wonder what's different? Well, lots because Smaug's conversion is not an LGM kit. Still similar enough though that I'm surprised at the behavior you see.
Regarding the oil smoke, check the tech notes section of the Garrett web site. I distinctly remember reading info about positioning the turbo to facilitate oil and coolant flow. I also remember reading that the oil pipe needs a restriction because the ball bearing turbo requires a smaller oil flow than a journal bearing. Come to think of it, maybe high oil pressure in the ball bearing is actually slowing spool up...
