Bob's Bits for Saab/Vectra Front Brake Upgrade

Postby tweetdriver63 » Mon 04.10.2010, 20:47

37 GBP including postage to US for all the bits needed for the upgrade, minus calipers and discs. BTW, I'm not the guy leading this group buy. I just started this thread so the one describing the upgrade I did could remain informational in nature.

Might end up less - if we can have bob package into one box and ship to me. Depends how many we get.

It may be less if I can order more than 20 bolts (4 per car) and there also may be a reduction in postage this end but do not forget they still have to be posted on.

Just so people know lotos was the one behind this list although tweetdriver63 moved it, so once he make the desision that there is enough on the list, he can collect the money and send it to me I will sort out the parts and send them, saves me running another group buy.
To much to do as it is.
As it stands I think the price can come down to £35.00 but that is likley to be it.
I think it may be as well to post them direct to indivduals as there is nothing to gain by sending one package as the original cost £7.00 weight 500g and the cost just go up the more weight you add so that 1000g is about £14.00

That is too cheap to pass up, even if I end up doing Hispecs as planned.

Having people (like Bob, and many others) who have the knowledge, ability and willingness to do these things for those of us who have only the willingness, is what makes this such a great community.

Bob, This may sound like (and probably is) a dumb question but the Saab has discs on all four corners. With your rear hub kit could the rears also be replaced with the same Saab/Vectra rear brake upgrade ?

In a nut shell No as the rear handbrake on the MkI Saab/Vectra uses a combined disc/drum and is too deep to get in and the MkII does have a combined handbrake caliper but it will not fit. due to mounting restrictions.

Bob has asked me to handle collecting all the US funds, and send him one lump payment. Then, he'll create the kits and mail them out to everyone individually. So - please paypal me USD$60.00 and I'll mark your name paid on this list. (GBP Conversion plus paypal fee so Bob doesn't have to cover that) Let's keep it open for another week to allow some time for anyone who wants in. So the list will close Tuesday, October 12.

Could you all PM your names and addresses as I will need to know where to send them, lotos I have yours already so that you and superbad covered.

With the first set up I did a set of round spacers as it was not worth the effort to make up the tooling to make a single spacer but as there are a few to make I will be making a single spacer for each caliper like this.

Tricky with out a cnc machine.
Have almost completed 7 pairs, was eight but messed one pair up when machining them and now need some more material.

Chris if you want a pair let me know but it will not effect anything just looks a bit better.

I'm just an idiot speaking out loud, and in no way with Bob's blessing or even knowledge, but...

(What? Are you STILL reading? What's it take to get rid of you?) I'd think the cheapest yet biggest bang for the buck on a rear upgrade might be had by retaining the OEM rear caliper, but making a bracket (key Bob) so it could be repositioned further from the hub, to clamp onto a larger diameter replacement rotor. That would also cure the visual impression that the Elan's rear disc was stolen off a toy car!
Strive for perfection in everything. (given time)
Take the best that exists & make it better. (given inclination)
If it doesn't exist, create it. (God did)
Ignore what I say. (good advice)

Thanks for the offer, Bob, but don't worry about it. If there's no functional reason to replace the individual ones with these then there's no reason at all. As far as looking better, that's kind of the same as what you said about grinding a couple of mm's off the pads where they overhand the rotors slightly. It would only look better if somebody could actually see it, which nobody can.
