That's what I was wondering - it seems to say that in every technical sense the Elan is better but that somehow the MX-5 beats it anyway...

depends on the cars that were driven I guess.....dont forget theyre both 20 years old....
and if 1 of them is maintained better than the other then your gonna think that......

the mx5 has never handled anything like the elan to I reckon the 'test' driver was a muppet.......

Having a Fed. Elan and a 91 MX5, I would have to say.
1. Put the Elan engine into the Miata.
2. Stiffen springs and suspension.
3. Larger rubber.
4. I'm a happy camper

My current Elan only leaks when stationary...

I took a quick look at the newsagent and put the mag straight back on the shelf, rather a weak comparison
in my humble view.. What's fun in a car is different for everyone and being able to zip past MX5s of
whatever generation in the Elan is fun enough for me If the Elan wasn't a hoot to own and drive then it's
hard to understand why so many of us hold onto them for so long

It's probably my advancing years but I care less and less about what other people think. Once you shed the
shackles of worrying about such things life becomes a lot less stressful and a whole lot more enjoyable - particularly
if you've a clear twisty road ahead and you're in the Elan

My ultimate memory from once driving an MX5 is that I was both door-to-shoulder & shoulder-to-shoulder. It was even tighter inside than an MG Midget.

I drove a 3rd-gen Toyota MR2 (you know, the convertible one) on that same day. They must have been designed around the same skinny driver.

I agree. I actually like the Elan partly because it is unusual and individual and that other people don't get it. It makes me an individual. Just because other people don't agree that it is better than an MX5 (and the majority would probably say that judging by the sales numbers) doesn't mean that it isn't better for me.
