What's the most bizarre thing you've carried in your Elan?

Postby Enright » Tue 03.08.2010, 21:46

When I first saw pics of the recent Top Gear test, with the enormous terracotta pot in the passenger side of Hammond's Elan, it got me thinking about some of the wierd and wonderful things I've carried in mine. So as a starter and a bit of a giggle, can anyone compete with these?

At number 3: a front bumper in the passenger seat, from N-N-N-Nuneaton to N-N-N-Nottingham in N-N-N-November. The damn thing scooped in the cold air that would normally pass harmlessly over the top, blasted me with it and nearly froze my bloody hands off. Heater on full and I still couldn't feel a thing. God I took some de-frosting! :-D

At number 2, and only a few months ago: a recently deceased Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the boot. Yes, honestly. My partner's ordinarily pungent dog's batteries finally ran out, at the worst possible time - flippin' Saturday night. So I had to take it on it's final journey in state (or at least in a smelly blanket) to the PDSA for cremation. I'm just glad I wasn't pulled over, as explaining it would have been, er, tricky.

But not as tricky as number 1: an LEC moderator in the boot. Can you guess which one? No, not Ailwyn, or Sy! OK I'll tell you - it was Clemo. 3 weeks after I bought the Elan at the end of the first curry evening, we ran out of transport back from the Melbourne Arms to the Holiday Inn. With 3 people to transport, and only 2 seats in which to ferry them, Clemo elected to use the last available space - the one in the back. WillB lent him a still packaged shower cape to use as a pillow, and off we went, naturally taking it especially easy over any hump-backed bridges, speed bumps and round roundabouts - NOT!

Seem to remember you doing Hammond's drive into the factory with a bald bloke on your n/s B post cap too Enners!

Mine -

Last Wednesday Mum wanted to go for a drive - 83 years old and insisted on the roof being down too.

Aftersales Event - half the bloody factory in the boot, more than Specky could get in his Volvo Estate!

School run - daughter and her mate! Don't ask.

And going off topic, 43 Elan heaters in a Yaris

I've carried a rather substantial floor lamp (with shade) in the passenger seat. Maybe not that strange but given it was in my RHD car here in LHD Germany, with the roof down, I imagine it must have looked like some sort of spindly alien being was driving. I even had the seatbelt done up for good measure. I did get a few looks...

I still want to borrow a big, silly-looking dog and go cruising sometime.

By the way...

... At the party, I seem to have pulled the 'big silly-looking dog' that TJi is on about...

my younger son. Any American 12-year-old who quotes Monty Python and wears a John Lennon "Give Peace A Chance" t-shirt to a US Air Force Civilian Auxiliary youth meeting qualifies as bizarre... in a good way to make a papa proud!

6 fence posts and a 50 meter roll of wire mesh, not funny as such but was bloody amazed it all fitted, without having to take the roof down either.
