Hi all frst post on here although i've been regstered for a couple of years...... Tried buying one on a couple of occasions even getting as far as test driving and leavng a deposit on Jackinokos pacific blue one before being posted to the middle east at zero notice. So went and saw one yesterday and was happy enough with what i saw to test drive it today, contacted the previous owner who said it was a pretty straight car on which he had spent a fair amount and had no majour issues although he said there was a small oil leak which he thought was the head gasket...... So on the test drive it went very well, stopped well, handled well etc but i could smell burning oil, ie oil dripping onto the hot exhaust, couldn't see any smoke etc although i specified the leak must be fixed if the sale was to proceed, any thoughts on where to start looking. Also i'm not sure what one component was in the engine bay although i'm sure it wasn't stock due to the wiring, it was attached to the front of the bay to what looked like a solenoid and had a knob with a dial two wires and one bare wire going to the coolant pipe attached to the thermostat housing, any ideas?

Sounds like an adjustable thermo fan control switch?

Yup!
And the leaky gasket is probably just a leaky O-seal on the bung or CAS (cheap fix!)

I was going to throw that one in too but theres always a chance it is the HG

Cheers for the replies, i also found a "lec paperclip and fault code ditty" unused in the glovebox so at least one of the owners was a member on here. Been having a look around the site and the dial knob is mounted on the water pump so i pressume it controls this and/or the fans?

Was this BRG located just east of Braemar by any chance ?

No was the kind of unloved looking one at a dealers in Kilmarnock, used to belong to one of the members on here. Looked good in the flesh with a terrific history (28 stamps in the book, all the old mot's and bills, new stainless exhaust, callipers disc pads etc) drove really well,........just the oil leak made me waiver.........
