WOULD THE REAL "LOTUS" PLEASE STAND UP

There is a lot going on with the lotus name so to bring it to the attention of the non f1 fans i have started this heading , its not about f1 racing but more about the goings on ...(if this is a daft scatterboming thread then i will merge the topic)

BUT ...

GROUP LOTUS have an f1 team entry next year , which has a renault engine
TEAM LOTUS (ex f1 carved off in the chapman years and sold to david hunt currently the F1 team you have seen this year , have bought the name)

TILL NOW the current f1 team known as lotus were given the rights to use the lotus name , untill group lotus decided to run their own team , and pulled the licencing rights.. in the mean time the crafty lot went and bought the name from david hunt and claim they have a legal right to use the name. To be known as TEAM LOTUS will also be using a renault engine

Now the confusing bit ,
Renault F1 lotus and Team Lotus f1 renault will be on the grid next year and one of them has the red bull gearbox...

ahh but i don't reckon thet will both run black and gold , so one may have cleverly stopped the other from using it?

Maybe, but they've both announced black&gold. Lotus Renault have displayed a car in the colours and Lotus Racing have gone so far as to solicit designs on their web site; some look rather good. On the other hand, maybe what we're perceiving as black&gold on Lotus Renault is really the new Group Lotus green; so dark it looks black unless in direct lighting. I saw this on the new badge at the LA auto show and was told by the nice man from Marketing that this is part of their new corporate identity.

What's in a name?

While I was won over by Team Lotus this year - through their undoubted passion and respect for the real Lotus (eg as shown at Snetterton), I was one of the not so sure about it all at the start. I mean who were they? Air Asia asking Proton of they could put a Lotus badge on their car to claim some unearned heritage - with a view to moving the team base to Malaysia and complete independence from both cars and engineering. But they ran the team more openly than most. They were up front about what they expected to be able to do and worked very hard to achieve it. Worthy of some support but still it wasn't quite a Brawn performance was it!

But if we stick with them, we have to ignore the wishes of our new Ferrari management that we should now support Renault who ironically only have a minority stake in the Renault team and are looking to flog even that. Its not clear how DB worked out that Renault would make a better advertising hoarding than Air Asia - especially as the groundwork had already been done on the other car.

Of course the Group F1 team will be no closer to Lotus than the Malaysian F1 team, so perhaps it doesn't matter. Lotus gets to be paraded on TV on 4 cars instead of 2 - didn't seem to do any harm to Red Bull and Toro Rosso.

There is no problem with this. Back in the day the Lotus 49 was campaigned by the works team and was also sold to and raced by privateers.

I know this time round the chassis are different but surely the more Lotus on the grid the better! And the Renault RS27 is the best engine, powering both teams.

dont forget that a Lotus car won its first F1 race at Monaco in 1961.....a Lotus 18...driven by Sir Stirling Moss...for Rob Walker racing...........
