Help stuck in sainsburys and wont start now sorted

Help needed,

Car was a bit rough while driving to work, I'd put my foot down and it would stutter along then all of a sudden regain power.
I stopped for some milk, jumped back in the car and it would no longer tick over, the engine would not turn over, all it would do was backfire making every one on the forecourt jump and this is all it will do.
I now have to leave the car at the petrol station till i finish work

Any advise needed please before I call the RAC after work.

Am I correct in assuming yours is a NA?

If so then I would suspect the distributor, mind did what yours is doing but would start most times till it decieded to breakdown on a roundabout 1/4 mile from home so walked back picked up the nice new dizzy and removed the old one and bolted on the new making an educated guess at the timing. It started first flick of the key.
It turned out that the rotor arm had lost the little spring clip that helps retain it on the shaft how it came out I have no idea but it was lying in the cap and looked like it had been there a while.

So I would say your first check would be the dizzy and you only need a cross point screwdriver.

If you need a new cap and rotor urgently let me know as I have a spare set brand new and can get them off in the post today.
Cost is £17.50 + postage.

The complete dizzy is/was available in the aftersales A100E6009S Distributor (NA) £51.06 but you will need to be quick and contact Specky if you want one.

Specky, I was going to ask if you wanted a spare rotor but as you alreasy have one....... I ordered a cap and a couple of rotor arms from RockAuto before Xmas which I have now recieved.
I was working on the assumption one should have a spare dizzy with a new cap and rotor, always handy on a NA which I now have.

Big thanks to Bob and Specky for advise and super speedy posting of parts. Changed distributer and all appears to be cool. And running soundly again.

Hi Bob,

Yes similar to yours the metal contact on the rotor was damaged and was loose in the cap.
Sorry for late reply, only just noticed.
