A pillar seals,another alternative found!.

Postby Jamie N » Thu 17.06.2010, 23:22

And unlike my last discoveries back in 2007 (renault 19conv),these ones are much more easily found,on a mk1 MR2 t-bar,although i think the fixed roof model will be usable also. These were sourced in a scrapyard and i have a spare set also,i havn't checked new prices with toyota but a quick check on mr2 forum indicated they were easily available.

These are rubber seals very similar to the Renault ones i used on my blue Elan, not spongey rubbish that Lotus used :D ,and have a very smooth classy finish, the fit is actually very like the original, with the stepped part for the mirror and the flared end to attatch to the body, the rear channel is also a perfect fit.

The tricky part is finishing the top where it meets the hood,i cut it level with the screen then used a flat piece of the same type rubber and cut out the shape to fit,i then superglue gelled this in position and then sikaflexed it to the frame, after 10 mins i dabbed the sikaflex with a rag dipped in olive oil to flatten the sikaflex and blend it seamlessly into the seal, the end result being a fabulous improvement on the originals, perfectly waterproof as it meets beautifully with the glass and will still look new for many years, these seals are probably 20 years old already!.

Hopefully here is the pics,Jamie.

Wow - those look like they belong there! So to be clear, these are from a 1st-gen Toyota MR2 (the little wedgy one) with removable top?

I dont have a part number, and yes they are from the door wedge MR2,1986-1990 ish, usually easily identifiable by the voluminous amounts or iron oxide. :D

Jamie

Well done - good posting.

Another tip for sikaflex or black silicone is to put cling film over it then smooth it - it won't stick while it's wet or dry so you can close the door onto it while it goes off.

New to this forum and m100's, so sorry if i ask daft questions.
Read your post with interest, but unsure which seal you have replaced is it the A pillar seal that runs up the sides if the winscreen or accross the top ?
Sourcing Lotus parts is prooving very dificult
I have just bought an Elan and looking to replace hood and all seals, it leaky.
I live in East Yorkshire so if you have any recomendation

A post is at the front of the door window.
B post is the rear of the door window.

I thought Lotus had made a lot of these recently, enough to have them in stock for quite some time?
They were looking at an alternative material but apparently the covered foam gave the best seal  so stuck with the original meterial.

My A pillar seals were disintergrating at the top and water was getting in when it rained heavily.

I used Loctite Flexible Sealant and Clingfilm to stop it getting were I didn't want it. After a drying over night.. Well its not invisible mending! But I don't get a wet right knee anymore!
