Same here - never done any serious speed in the Elan. Id be happy with quick acceleration from a shorter ratio box rather than top speed from a longer box. That would be my choice anyday of the week. Not sure what kind of speeds the Elan can see on some tracks ( Most iv had is hitting the limiter in 5th @ 119mph on Combe Straight) but I'm sure the standard box is good enough for most.

I hit 120+ at Talladega last summer, and there was plenty more where that came from (I think). There was another 2500ish RPM left to the redline.

Sounds like the box is more than capable to do the speeds id ever be doing lol
From the small amount of use iv had out of my se its seems a decent box, defineatly fit for my purpose.

By the way when i topped that box out on track it was not in an Elan.

What car was it :?:

I've been a little over 120 at Combe, sure that was fourth gear in an old Saab.. , only used the Elan once at Combe and didn't get to 100 on the straight  , it was my first go in the Elan and I'm sure I could carry a lot more speed into the corners,,,,I'll be pushing a bit harder next year... now I have Roll hoops :-D

I seem to get about 23MPH per 1K revs. This I think will limit the top speed regardless of the power available.
In a Mazda 626Gt I saw 130 with 148 BHP. also the same indicated speed in a 309GTi - one of the best handling cars I have owned. (I had 2)
As I can't afford to track mine I would be quite happy with slightly higher ratios or a 6 speed box. This would give more relaxed cruising
at 90 (on the continent) plus a little more MPG.

Was a Series 1 106 Rallye (though had a 1600 16v GTi engine in with a short ration box. :D Good fun!

Can't wait to take the elan out on track in 2010!

150mph on the Speedo and GPS on TomTom showed 140.

Only mod to my knowledge was Everest chip.

Thinking of doing mine with party popper streams coming out lol.

It was NOS, with a +75Hp spray and optional +150hp. You can read all about it in this Forum if you have the time at the projects section.

mmmmm 6 speed box................

bob.........you ready for another project??...... :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

When I suggested this a year or so ago, someone pointed me in the direction of a competition box.
I have always wanted to be able to cruise at "modern" motorway speeds without the engine running
at high revs and the exhaust deafening me. Come up with a solution and I might hang on to her

I tend to think that if I'm comfortably doing more than about 60 in the Elan I need to find a twistier road!
Having done some motorway miles recently, I do agree that it's not a relaxed high speed cruiser. Not sure there'd be room for more gearbox in there though!
