Former Elan Owner Receives New Evora

Postby Hegg » Sun 13.02.2011, 17:36

As a continuation of this thread, I decided it best to start a new topic. I just received my new 2011 Lotus Evora yesterday.

To begin with, I've found that there are a few "lines" of Lotus owners - the Esprit types (fast, dramatic, upscale presence, recognizable movie acclaim), the Seven/Elise types (teeny, lightweight, track killers, steering feel and connection to the road), and the Elan types (comfortable, classic, daily drivable, passionate). I'm having a hard time placing the Evora because it's all of them. It's dramatic, it looks like it's right at home with $300k supercars yet it's $65k, the steering and road feel is better than perfect, it's extremely comfortable, and easily a daily driver.

I don't think any one of the aforementioned "lines" of Lotus owner types is more correct or pure than any of the others. I feel that Lotus' philosophies - particularly of Colin Chapman - are not as strict and permanent as some are led to believe. Chapman said great things like "add lightness", but frequently that is focused on too much. Chapman said lots of other things, experimented in many ways, and did not just build teeny, single-purpose cars. He designed/built the Seven, Eleven, Elite, Elan, Elan +2, Europa, and Esprit. Those span all of the qualities I mentioned earlier. He was not a single-minded man and was very willing and able to expand his horizons and keep his mind open. The only reason I bring that up is because it frustrates me when I hear all those complaining about "oh, the Evora or Elan or the 'New Era' cars are not true to Chapman, shame on Lotus". Lotus are open-minded innovators, not single-track drones.

Ok, so I've rambled (I tend to do that).

As some already know, I am a previous Elan M100 owner, as well as an S1 Esprit, Elan +2, and Elise (the US edition, I think normally referred to as the S2 for you proper Brits :)). Of all the cars, I would have a hard time choosing a favorite. They were all completely different; hardly a single commonality between all of them. If I could, I would still have all 4 of them plus the Evora. On the other hand, my favorite community is undoubtedly this group of M100 owners. By far the most helpful, most kind, most understanding, most passionate, and most interested in the trials and success of the fellow members. It's no surprise I have more pictures posted on this, then Elan forum, than on the *other* Lotus forum.

Anyway, thank you for the great community and I do hope to remain active and in contact with many of you. One day, if circumstances permit, I would love to get another Elan.

Ok, so I'm sure you didn't come here expecting an emotional bearing of my soul, so here are Evora pictures!

If anyone has any questions about the car, I'll be glad to answer as best I can. I would also be happy to take pictures of anything that may interest you as well. :)

Not even 60 miles on the car yet, and I received it with 24 miles. So not much to say about the driving experience yet other than it's great! LOTS of stares too - much more so than any of my previous Lotus cars. I'm sure the orange helps. 8)

By the way for the blokes and, uh, what's the English equivalent of "chicks"? Those are actual mountains in the background. It's not a mural or a Photoshop. :)

(have to tease - had some British friends visit my family years back and all they could do was stare at the Rocky Mountains in unbelief)

Incredible colour/color, but having owned several loti, in partcular Esprits, i cant help but wonder if calling it 'burnt' orange is tempting fate

I like the color. Beware its "cop magnet" properties though! What stands out to pedestrian eyes stands out to all human vision.

Out of red/white/yellow M100s I got the most police attention in my red car, followed not far by the yellow, even though I've received the most comments on the yellow.

Same colour as Stevo's Elan  Think I prefer the Evora though ;-)

Beautiful car and fantastic colour. I'm green with envy

Thanks for all the comments! It's been a great car so far and we all love it. My 3-year-old loves sitting in the back and watching the engine (as well as the navigation maps). Only 615 miles so far; another 400 to go for the break-in period. Then I can give it some beans and see what it'll do. :)

Took it out in the first snowstorm and it does excellent in the snow (with snow tires of course). I felt very secure and confident in the car's abilities on the slippery roads. Quite impressive.

Congratulations! I drove an Evora at a Lotus factory event, and definitely want one (as well as, not instead of my Elan, I hasten to add). I love the looks (much better in the flesh than in any picture I've seen), power, handling and brakes (they take a bit of getting used to after the Elan's!).

It took me about 20 years from wanting an Elan to getting one, so I'm targeting a maximum of 10 years for the Evora (which make it 9 years from now).
Regards

Mark/.

The brakes are far superior to the Elan and even, in my opinion, the Elise. I'm still getting used to them (especially when switching back from the Toyota Matrix). My planned lifetime for my Evora is 10 years and hopefully close to 200,000 miles. It'll be fun to see what holds up and what doesn't.

Just curious - what color did you see in the flesh? Most of them I've seen are gorgeous in person, but my dealer's Aquamarine / Anthracite is probably the least attractive combo I've witnessed.

Here's to hoping you'll get one soon!

The one I drove was a Silver, but there were a number of demonstrators (and lots of different colours on the production line in the factory)

If a convertible automatic version was available I believe that my wife would make me sell of few cars in order to buy one. Amazing differences in the color shown on the various photographs. Good Luck.

I considered the IPS (automatic) as well, mostly so my wife could have a chance to drive a Lotus (she doesn't do stick shift). But then I'd be waiting even longer as I can't even place an IPS order yet.

The different colors in each picture really show how dynamic the color is. It's a 4-stage pearlescent paint of some sort and it looks really nice. That's why it looks different in each picture.

Geoff, if Salt Lake City seems too much of a trek, maybe Bournemouth would be a better option! I've now got a Burnt Orange Evora as well 8)
