Lower Steering Column U-Joint

Does anyone have any tips on replacing the lower steering column u-joint? Land Rover Part # NRC7704
This one:

Did you replace from the pedal box side, remove steering column, or is it a bite-the-bullet remove front underframe assembly?
Any advice appreciated.

Edit … Realising now you’re referring to the next joint down Tony … I imagine there is an amount of the work needs doing from underneath.

Its done from inside the car, no need to remove either the steering rack or the column.

Remove both bolts and you should be able to get enough movement to get it out.

Doing a search on heavy steering problems, I note that this U joint can be a culprit. I too have developed heavy steering over this last year or so. There are no leaks, the pump seems to be working OK ( tested with engine ON and OFF). With car jacked up ( wheels off the ground) and turning the steering using the wheels it does feel stiff and notchy. Wouls this be a good indicator of a worn U joint or is there another way of t=checking this. Any comments appreciated.

Do not forget there is a particular orientation of the upper and lower UJ's which will have an effect if not installed correctly in the "feel" of the steering.
