Gearbox oil - Castrol TAF-X 75W-90 or equivalent

Postby GeoffSmith » Thu 19.05.2011, 19:36

Does anyone want some tranny oil brought to CC? Opie say that the recommended oil (Castrol TAF-X 75w-90) "…is sadly discontinued so its while stocks last with this one." Specky x4 and I x4 need some and postage is free for orders over £100 so one more. The best I've found elsewhere is £12.99 per litre incl. P&P and Opie is £11.33 for members. The Elan needs 1.8l so 2 off to refill the box.

That would be for the engine, not the gearbox. Or is my gearbox running 5W/30?

Keep up Phil, at the very start, GeoffSmith wrote:Does anyone want some tranny oil brought to CC? Anyhow, I've bought two packs of 12 so there are three more lots available. The good news is I've negotiated the price down to £8.50 per litre, but the kitty would obviously like to keep it simple and be happy to accept £10 if you can afford it! :D

Castle Coombe - 28th May 2011

Postby dapinky » Fri 20.05.2011, 17:25

I have to say, that on first inspection, Phil IS correct - checking my handbook and the workshop manual.......

......but then realised that Geoff has an S2, so the handbook was possibly written for what was availlable at the time of production.........

....so i delved a bit and found.......

....this informative article......

....so......

....bottom line is that the 2 sets of numbers are the same, but on different scales.

a bit like comparing Farenheit to Celcius i suppose

anyway, I'll have a couple :-D

Gearbox oil is specified by American Petroleum Institute (API), engine oil by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and they're different. See the other Wiki - "API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example, many modern gearboxes use a 75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil."

Isn't that article written from an American point of view?
