less boost when hot (outside temp)

Postby ratman » Wed 25.05.2011, 07:35

hello to everybody!
I noticed that my Elan (with good shape turbo, blow off valve, everest chip) is used to have less overboost when it is hot outside.
usually when it is cold (winter but summer nights as well) the car is overboost to 0.9bar but when is hot it is running 0.5bar, not more.
I thought that could be the intercooler partially closed but it seems in good conditions and clean (from outside).
has someone experienced something similar????

thanks for all the comments! Federico.

you need to run Elan scan to see what temps your running, whats the temp gauge showing? Maybe a stuck thermostat :? if the ecu thinks the temp is high then you will get reduced boost, not sure what temp this happens at but i`m sure someone will be around to answer that one

the temperature seems to be ok, less than a quarter when running and 3/4 when fan start cycling and you're not running.

Maybe with the heat the wastegate is sticking open which would reduce boost :? try the wiggle

ciao, thanks for your comments!
I think that it is not the problem because the cause seems to be the heat of the air, not the turbo.
if outside is cold, the car runs good up to 0.9bar when it has warmed up (the car).
when the air is hot, the car is running 0.5bar

I`m only throwing ideas but i was thinking as the engine bay gets hot it`s effecting the actuator and it`s sticking :?

I still would check that with ES that the running temp is correct as the ecu will only reduce the boost when it`s being told the engine temp is to high.

Have you got an engine light on? as said above check for codes.

Oh BTW, is it definitely loosing power and it`s not the gauage playing up?

I can feel that the power is different and tha gauge is not running over 0.5. when outside is cold it runs up to 0.9 and you could feel the power!

Very strange, hope someone else can help out with some ideas :?

Think you need to do run with the ES and log it so someone can take a look.
