Seat Heaters

Postby peter canepa » Fri 08.07.2011, 01:04

Its taken me over a year, but I got them in and it wasn't easy. I first went to the local stereo shop. Guys that have been there for years, have a lot of upholstery experience. They sold me the heaters, about $200. Then I took the car to my friend at the Watsonville Airport who does aircraft interiors. He took the covers off installed the heaters, then did a die thing to the leather, they look like new seats. By the way the car has 35,000. on it. Then back to the Stereo guys to hook up the electrical. I wanted to fill those dummy switches on the dash with stock looking ones. After searching in England and looking for those Carlton ones, I gave up and bought two AC ones from Dave Bean. The work at the Stereo shop wasn't perfect and I brought the car back three times.
Its sorted out now and it fantastic to have the top down at night, and be warm.

I agree that they make driving roof down at night a much more pleasant experience.

I took a slightly different approach since my Elan has done 88k & the original seats were worn & torn. I was not a fan of the red stripe OEM seats either.
I bought some heaters off e-bay for £50 & got them installed when I had the seats re-covered. These ones come with small circular 2-position switches.
These are mounted in the centre console. They do not look out of place but are a little too close to where I rest my elbow while driving :( I was forced to place them here because I need to disconnect them when removing the centre console. Their plugs are now right under the oddment tray.

Yes, the heaters that I used came with 3 settings, low/high/off, and the same round switches. That is another sacrifice I made was I now only have two settings, ON/OFF.
We have those dummy switches on the dash that need to be filled. I now only have one left, maybe fog lights. I see Marie has figured that out lately.

I wonder how bad it would look to just mount the 3-way switch that comes with the heaters into one of the blanks. Certainly not OEM.
