IHI RHB5 compressor map

I believe (99% sure) that this is the compressor map for our Turbo. I also have the Turbine map if interested.

I think it was the back side of a beer coaster! :D

One of our new Design Engineers was lucky enough to score this while working on a project in college. We did a few calcs and it's seems correct, but then again.....

Seems Ashaman had a similar .pdf a while back on the "old" forum. About the same cocktail napkin quality, too. :wink:

Thanks, Russ. This seems to confirm the general thought that the stock turbo is perfect for the stock application and can handle up to 15 psi without much issue. Above that pressure, you start spinning the little guy beyond 140,000 rpm. Don't know the limits of the bearings at that speed... It seems the efficiency doesn't go down much, though! Impressive.

Ok, since I have read how to read these I don't know how many times.... And even then I am not sure I fully understood it....
And now I sure don't remember it....

What do you make of it Mr. Garrett man? looks like this one is indeed a higher flow, eh? How does it compare with some of the more modern turbo models?

You know what, it's really hard to compare an old compressor map or even a new one for that matter unless they are run on the same test stand at the same calibration. We have upgraded our test stands in the last 5 years and if we run a new test on an older turbo (customer request) we'll get different results based on the more accurate calibration we have today. One of the Engineers has said he will try and slip my turbo in for a compressor map test after I take it off. The only problem will be furnishing an appropriate adapter for the housing. It would be extremely interesting to do a comparison and match it up to one of the newer turbos.

Hmm..ah well. I should have added that the map I posted above is from the larger VJ17 RHB5 that some of us have installed. It is supposed to flow ~370CFM versus ~250.

Yeah, if you ever do get around to that it would be interesting to see!

Interesting that a number of 2.5L diesels use it. Most surprising is that the 1L Diahatsu Charade GTti, a 3cyl 99HP car, also used it, yet was considered quite sprightly and without lag; had 12.5psi boost from the factory yet could easily run over 1 bar with ECU controls removed.

PS: Or did the Elan use the RHB52? I don't recall for sure.
