Before I take a grinder to the 5 rusty screw heads holding the rear bumper to the boot floor, is there a technique to holding/removing those stupid rubber nuts inside the boot? I am changing to stainless fasteners (OK I thought I was doing the easy mini projects first!).

The approved technique i used was to take a grinder to the bolts, throw away the broken rubber rivnuts, and replace with M6 stainless nuts and bolts!!!!!
(on a serious note, grind carefully and don't spent too much time on each one, otherwise the heat will build up and damage the bodywork - take your time and its straightforward enough).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thanks, I suspected that is the answer. I purchased some M5 fasteners (screws and nyloc nuts) as per the Wiki. I wondered if the rivnuts are supposed to provide some sort of weather seal but seeing as I (try to) avoid rain it isn't going to be a problem. Cheers
