Some of you will be aware that a few months ago I had a brand new, Tickford/Trim Technology hood, all hood an A pillar seals fitted by Mark Miller-Burrage of m100hoods.co.uk

Apologies to you all and most particularly to Mark for the delay in posting this information, but we had a couple of minor teething issues to sort, and Mark had some website problems so I didn't want to post until these were sorted. This post is written solely from a customer perspective, and I have no business connection with m100hoods, etc. etc.

I was made aware of Mark's business by way of a flyer left on the car at Snetterton back in the summer. Despite being a 1995 S2, my hood (a blue original) was looking faded and tatty, the rear window was the colour of a pint of semi-skimmed, and the window stitching was all but replaced with what looked like a mixture of silicon sealant and super glue. There were leaks at both A pillars, and the usual wear holes at the back corners. Actually, my A pillar seals were also working better as sponges than seals so I opted to have these replaced at the same time. After making contact with Mark I decided to take the plunge, have the whole lot replaced, and mine was one of the first few cars he worked on.

That isn't to say he's a novice - Mark is ex-factory and worked on both the production line and in aftersales when the M100 was in production, and is an owner and enthusiast himself (although not a prolific poster on here!) with ongoing connections both at the the factory and aftersales.

Mark is based near Lowestoft on the East Coast - ideal for me in Norwich but may be a tad more "geographically challenging" for some of you - however I am aware that he's looking at a collection and delivery service.

Mark has obtained the final 85 sets of hood seals from Trim Technology (they still bear the original "made in Canada" stickers), who are also still able to manufacture the hood cover to OEM specification, and in a selection of colours. Having never particularly liked the blue hood on my car I opted for black - also a small cost saving. The seals are, I believe, made using a chemical extrusion process that has now been banned in Canada, at least...

Mark had the car for over a week, and his attention to detail is incredible, even extending to replacing fixings with stainless steel equivalents where applicable. My hood is now as good as new, and is watertight! All seals, webbing, tension cables, and A pillar seals were replaced.

Shortly before by booking date, my LH side central locking failed, and Mark also replaced the actuator unit (I obtained the part) while the door was stripped out for window alignment.

As my car has Kuching roll bars, bubble deck and hard top fittings the frame alignment was, to quote Mark, "a right pig" to get right - manly because of the way the hard top brackets are fitted to the hood mounting at the B pillar, and the restricted access around the roll bars - so much so, that he will be reluctant to consider any more cars with these mods.....

Mark subjects the car to a full water test involving a tank of water and quite a drop, which my car passed, but in regular use some minor drips occurred when moving in heavy rain - these were rectified at no extra cost and Mark was prepared to travel to my house to fix (but only a short-ish distance was involved of course....)

All in all I am extremely satisfied with the service and result - as you can imagine, the cost isn't insignificant and will vary depending on the amount of work involved so I won't be disclosing what I paid but I'm very glad it wasn't based solely on an hourly rate! :D I suggest anyone interested rings Mark for a chat/quote.

Pictures follow - before and after (although the before pictures don't make the old hood and seals look as bad as they were!). I've now had sufficient time to bed the hood in, and it's tucked away under my hard top for the winter, with suitable rolled and folded towels for protection.

As a final note, the hard top was interfering with the hood frame and in danger of ripping chunks out of the new seals until I realised that a PO must have fitted the rear fixing hooks backwards - turning them through 180 degrees so the hooked ends face the other way and a slight "reprofile" removes the risk and makes the hard top much easier to fit too!

Chill out, I've only just seen the thread..... :D

If you think your old roof was bad, you should see mine

I spoke to Mark at Snetterton. The basic price he gave me was not unreasonable but it does reflect what a major job it is to have the roof replaced.

I've driven my Elan about 3 times with the roof up this year & I normally fit the showercape when I park it. It is currently hibernating (with the roof down of course). Is spending the best part of £1000 on something I hardly use really a good investment for me?

It is useful to know that aligning the roof is such a pain. I wonder if an Elan with LGM roll hoops would put Mark off? They are a lot less intrusive than Kutching's ones.

Looks great - but the old one didn't look too bad, IMO. Did the hood replacement include frame refurbishment? Mine's got the usual tears, the rear screen's opaque and has a couple of holes in it, and the seals are tatty, albeit fairly watertight. I've been hoping to replace the hood, but as I may have to sell the car next year, should I go for this or spend the money (SWMBO: What money?) on Hispecs and a Piper exhaust? Which would attract more interest?

Standard car. You'll never get back all the money you spend on improvements/modifications.

Frame was fine - just needed some realignment..... Old one pi33ed water in, no use for my needs as the rest of the car was dry as had been garaged before.....

Fortunately, whilst my car was top money for an S2, all of the other mods had been done by previous owners....... ;-)

If you have the car off the road for a period of time I thought they are better with the roof up.

New hood looks fantastic. Mark has made a very good job of fitting it. I must also admit that your old hood is probably in better condition than mine

I contacted Trim Technology about a year ago to enquire about a new hood (without fitting).
I belive I was quoted about £700 + ish (sorry can't find the old email) but I have a feeling this did not include the rear deck seal...?

I have been holding off replacing it as like rip said I very rarely drive with the hood up. When it becomes an issue I will be happy to buy one from Mark (if still available) But at £1,000 i'm going to need a really good reason to replace it. unfortunatly I will not be able to have him fit it due to my location.

Fortunatly the only time my car gets wet is when it is washed. My main problem is the rear screen but seeing as the hood is down most of the time and the MOT here is kind of a formality than a safety issue. I guess mine will have to survive another year.

Hopefully people in the UK will be able to make the most of his fitting service. Looking at the trimmers here there is no one that could match his skills.

I bumped into Mark on Thursday in Wymondham town centre, always willing to stop for a chat about Elan matters he mentioned that he hopes to move into a larger workshop in the new year, which will enable him to offer more sevices to us Elan owners.

Hi
I am new to this forum and have had a 1990 M100 for the last three years. I have also lived with a wet leg whenever i get caught out in the rain. I only use the car on fine days and have only covered less than 500 miles each year...but I retire later this year to enjoy my Lotus full time and the miles will be much greater.
I am pleased to see the results of Mark's work and have spoken to him on the phone, it looks first class. It is always good to see fine workmanship.
Whilst i am still working i intend to solve the problem of the wet thigh.
my question is having had your new hood for some time now are all your leaks gone..and where did you find your hardtop which also looks great.
kind regards

Hi David - yes, I can confirm all leaks gone and the hood performs like a new one - that is, you still get the odd drip on the seat when you open the door in the rain! :D

My hard top was purchased by a previous owner and came with the car - if you search this forum for the term "Kuching" you'll find much of the background, including the reason why they're no longer in production :(

There's one for sale here at the moment http://pistonheads.com/sales/3459763.htm (not cheap! ) if you really want one - you need to make sure you get the rear mounting brackets and clip hooks (that fit onto the hood mounting points between the hood frame and the body) too...

Hi guys,

I had the wet knee problem, thought I'd try some 4mm seft adhesive rubber "D" seal along the "A" post seal where the door glass meets the rubber seal. Put it as tight to the glass as possible top to bottom and now no leaks :bananasex:

I thought this was all part of M100 ownership along with carrying a towel in the car for just such an emergency. At Castle Combe in the rain I had a wet right knee from driving my S2 and a wet left knee from when I was passenger in a friends SE!

My car is in with Mark at the moment.

I will post a new thread outlining my experience from start to finish when I get it back.

So far, he has been incredibly helpful and has shown great knowledge.

My car is a daily driver and everything under the bonnet is fanstastic, the interior is tidy enough for a car 20 years old. My only issue was the leaking - which was quite bad so I felt I either had to sell the car, or upgrade the roof and mainly the seals (all of them).

As I said, I'll post a thread with pictures of all Mark's handywork (with his permission of course) once I have the car back. He is arranging for several other jobs to be done while he has the car. The car's already had a new windscreen (insurance job) and alloy refurb whilst with him.

Just wanted other people who may be considering the hood replacement to know there are a lot more people had it done than the handful of people who have posted on here to date.

I got mine back from Mark 3 weeks ago.
Not cheap, but the roof & seals cost a fortune. He also found some damage to my frame which needed either repairing or some replacement parts. He spent quite a long time fitting & adjusting so I think the price was fair.
I am a lot happier with my new roof than he is :?
My old roof was in poor condition so a replacement was well overdue.

He also noticed a few other issues which I knew about but put up with. he is keen to fix these.
