s2 replacement bootlock

Postby GusMangoFish » Sat 07.04.2012, 17:01

My already very shoddy boot lock finally gave up the ghost today (fell apart into about 6 pieces earlier). Is there an easy to find replacement? (for an S2 Elan).

I've searched other threads on here, but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer as to where to get the part.

SJ Sportscars sells a "LOCK SET, (2 doors & boot)", but it says "Series 1 only.". Looking at the picture on their website, it doesn't look like it would work on an S2 Elan.

Just heard back from SJ Sportscars with the following:

"I am sorry the S2 boot lock is no longer available."

Anyone have any other ideas?...

How about some pictures? If the S2 used GM parts (remember Bugatti owned Lotus during the life of the S2) maybe it is a US GM part.

You know, what is different between the S2 and SE locks.

It is just a thought...

That is for a S1/SE lock. He needs an A100U6054F which fits cars from VIN R 6001 (S2)

A100U0095F is replaced by the THREE cylinder lock set A100U6033F at full retail of 65.58 + VAT NOW ON SALE for 15.00

My note said that is for the S1/SE. It will not work with an S2. Sorry. You need A100U6054F. Sorry.

Found this: http://www.aston-spares.com/partinfo.as ... PBID=60821 (£84.82 + VAT + Delivery I guess).

Or if you want the whole key set (doors, glove box, ignition, boot): http://www.aston-spares.com/partinfo.as ... PBID=60951 (a snip at a shade under £92,000.00).

It clearly states (in the red bar) that this part is now obsolete. The lock SET for the S2 is also obsolete. I was just quoting the correct part number so you could search old dealers looking for one and not end up with a lock from an SE. Since there are no pictures of an S2 lock anywhere I can find, I don't have any idea what you are looking for or why the SE lock won't fit. My assumption is they used a GM lock, but without having something to compare, it is useless to go looking until I know what I am searching for.

Yeah, my bad. I saw the "obsolete" sign (pretty hard to miss) but for some reason just thought that meant it wasn't a "current" part (as in, it's for a car that is no longer being produced). Realise now that means the part itself isn't available. doh :-|

Will take photos of the lock etc. tomorrow in the daylight.

When I see what the lock looks like, I will try to match it up with a replacement lock from a US GM car. A few measurements will probably help a bit too. Cheers.

I'm not too sure this will help and you may have seen it already but.......

Still worth getting some decent pictures and measurements so someone in the US can look for a replacement assembly.

Here's the pics I took earlier:

Image

I managed to re-assemble a few of the pieces (the barrel part on the left was in 4 separate bits). I have no idea what the loop of wire on the right does. The clip in the middle is the bloody useless retainer clip, that doesn't hold the barrel in place very securely. e.g. you put the key in and the boot will open okay about once (if you're lucky) before you have to jam the clip back in again. Failure to reset the clip exactly each time, will result in the barrel spinning round next time you put the key in. (this is the problem I originally posted about on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=14762&start=20 )

Image

Here's the hole where the lock goes. The fiberglass damage was caused from a previous garage's repair, and from when the lock was first ripped out. (When I bought the car the lock wasn't attached to the boot, so one of the first things I did was get it re-attached. Unfortunately the garage that did it, bodged it somewhat).

I can now tell from your pictures above that the plate shown in my picture below is definitely needed in order to firmly hold the lock in place. It would seem that the same thing has happened to your boot lock as happened to mine in that the plate, which should be firmly bonded to the inside of the boot lid, has become detached. I was fortunate in that my plate was still there albeit loose. For some reason your plate, at some time in the past, has been discarded/lost.

I've had a look and it doesn't seem that this plate is available as a separate part. Presumably, it was regarded as part of the Boot Lid!

Therefore, you're either going to have to find one from a scrapper or have one made up (which looking at it shouldn't be too difficult or expensive)

Image

When/if you manage to acquire a plate. It goes in through the lock access hole (it's a bit of a jiggle) and fixes inside the boot such that the "hole" of the plate lines up with the lock/barrel hole in the boot lid. Once it's in there the orientation of the plate is obvious because it will only fit snugly in one position.

Now that the plate's firmly fixed in place, the lock barrel will fit through the plate and the two full length "lugs" on the barrel at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock engage with the two slots at the same positions on the plate. This now prevents the lock barrel from spinning. Then, the "bloody useless retainer clip" :-D comes into it's own because the two prongs of the clip slide between the plate back and the shorter two lugs on the lock barrel at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.

Now the lock won't spin nor will it move backwards or forwards! It's firmly held in place.

I hope this makes sense? If it doesn't, just ask away! :-)

Thanks :) That makes perfect sense. And from looking at the other thread about this, is what I thought I did need at the time. You're right, it is missing - so must have been lost at some point in the past.

The lock itself is also damaged (falls apart easily, and looks very tatty due to previous attempts to jimmy it out the boot). So, will get a new/replacement lock and have that bit in your pic made up to fit.

In the meantime though, I picked up a spacer thingy from the local hardware strore and fitted that between the barrel head (in the grooved recess part) and the retainer clip. That seems to keep it in place fairly well.

Thanks again everyone for their help in this thread. Hopefully it will be of use in future to anyone else needing to replace an s2 boot lock.

Gus,

I've got a spare boot lid with (presumably) all the lock bits in place - it's from an SE not an S2, and I don't have the key, but if any of the bits are any good to you, let me know.

I can't see why the plate wouldn't be there, but i haven't dismantled any of it yet - i only got the boot lid because i wanted the elan badge off it, and the whole thing was cheaper than just buying a badge from Lotus :?
