Postby jc_uk » Mon 12.09.2011, 13:09

Hi,

I'm looking for a set of A post seals and the seals for the soft top.

Any availability and prices?

Many thanks

AFAIK, A post seals are now readily available from Lotus for about £150 a pair, which is half what they used to be.
Roof seals...not sure. I believe these are difficult to fit properly anyway.

Has anyone used this company yet? I'm considering a new hood and set of seals, but it's a hell of a long way to go from Devon - twice, given the time required - so I'd want a really enthusiastic recommendation before going for it. Or can anyone recommend anyone closer? (Otherwise I may just stick to hood down driving. More fun anyway.)

My car is also with Mark at the moment, new hood and all seals including A pillar. Mark had obtained the FINAL 85 pairs of falling pillar seals (rear of door glass). When they've gone, that's it. I know he fitted hood and seals to a German Elan, and now both Jim and I are being fitted. The cost is not cheap, but if you want to preserve your Elan long term it might be worth it.

I emailed to see the cost of seals only, no reply yet.

Maybe I'll just try and find something else to use.

Has anyone made any progress with this company? I E Mailed him as well and got no reply.

I just ordered a EZ On top and need all the seals but the left falling piller..

Just how differant is the old header seal from the S2 seal? There is a large differance in
price...

If its any use to any of you on here .I phoned Christopher Neil in Northwich last week and asked them for a quote for supply and fit A post seals .
They came back with a figure of £540.00 and that doesn't include the seal that goes across the top of the screen JUST THE A POST SEALS .Its a lot of money in my opinion so I wont be having it done there I might just buy two seals from S and J and have a go myself it cant be to difficult can it ?

Hatters, having recently done my A pillar seals I can vouch that it really is very easy.

The existing seals are held in to the carrier by sikaflex and push studded at the top of the A pillar and again at the bottom in the door space (you may not see these plastic poppers because they bay be covered in Sikaflex!). It takes a certain amount of courage to rip out the existing seal bit having done so you can clean up the carriers, they are held on to the A post by screws (rusted!) so here is the project creep if you want it! If you want to refurb the carriers then you will need to remove these screws.

Whatever, you will see from the removal how the new ones go in - it is very simple.

I got mine from Lotus via my local dealer, and paid about £170.00 the pair.

I have just removed the A pillar seals and the carrier, the latter was not easy to get off as the heads on some of the screws were rusty so could not get them out with a screwdriver so took the heads off carefully with a cutting disc in a Dremel. Once the carrier is removed there is enough of the screws sticking out to get molegrips on and they all came out.
If you read the manual the seals should be stuck on with a small 3mm bead of Stikaflex 221, this is tricky to clean out as it sticks like, well blanket springs to mind, I am not going to use Stikaflex 221 but rather Sikalastomer 710 as it does not go hard like 221 and should make it possible to remove the seals with out damage so if the screen needs to be replaced it can be done with out the cost of the seals.
WIll still apply a small bead of 221 around the top edge to seal it but that can be cut off with a knife if they need to come off.
I am also replacing the screen side finishers as when the screen was replaced some years ago they took the screen out with out removing the seals and thus the finisher did not extend down under the carrier, the finishers A100B0727F are cheap enough at £5.00, its the top one but cut in half does both sides.

Other than that fairly straight forward. I do not know how Christopher Neil can justify £540.00 as it does not take that long they must have been quoting a days work and it is no where near that an hour a side tops.

Time to dig the camera out as it is still in bits :)

Steve,

My hood is not to bad, possibly in need of a refresh but for me the main issue is the seals, I am waiting for a reply from M100 Hoods as they can do a complete job: hood & seals!

Let us know how you get on with this purchase and your subsequent fitting; I'm very interested to know how this progresses.

Does anyone know if any effort had ever been made to manufacture new seals and what success there was?

The new seal I picked up from aftersales was made in Canada, I E Mailed a
few places from there but had no luck.

Today I removed the fabric to check the condition of the frame. With it bare
it's easy to see how it works and much easier to adjust it to work smoothly.
It's looking like the frame itself needs to come apart and be refinished, lots of minor
rust and peeling paint. Not the best surface to glue the new top to..

So it looks like a week of refinishing and web replacement, just as well the new
top won;t be in for another 2 weeks or so.

Just managed to get my login sorted so now have had a chance to catch up with some of the recent posts.
Apologies to those of you who haven't had as swift a response as you would of liked but as it was correctly pointed out in a previous post my other business interests have kept me some what occupied.

For those of you who only want seals, at present I am only able to supply the whole hood kit with the seals, breaking up an existing kit to sell the odd seal here and there just doesnt make financial sense! That said I do occassionally have good second hand seals in stock which have been removed from cars that new parts have been fitted to. If carefully removed and refitted these can provide a short term solution.

With regard to A pillar carriers and seals I suggest you purchase these direct from Lotus Aftersales, if your vehicle is coming in to my workshop for a replacement hood then I can arrange the purchase and installation of these and any other parts you may require.

Cost wise the new hood kits are £950 INC VAT and providing the vehicle doesn't have modifications, ie roll bars! then fitting should be straight forward.
Therefore the estimated total cost fitted is £1500 INC VAT. If you want the framework removed, prepared and re coated then each vehicle is priced according to the condition of the framework. Please bear in mind that some vehicles are more tricky to work on than others but to date £1500 for the hood and seal kit to be supplied and fitted seems to be a good average.

Customers who have left their m100 with us for the hood replacement have also taken the opportunity to have other minor bodywork and seal issues addressed, such as door wipe seals, speakers replaced, new door locks/ catches fitted and A pillar seals/carriers. In addition general servicing can also be undertaken.

Whilst I am on I should also mention that we have excellent rail links to Norwich and many of our customers have driven their cars to the workshop or station and taken the train home, which if booked in advance is much cheaper than the fuel to drive !
In some circumstances I am able to come to your vehicle but generally this is for minor repair works only and whole hood kits need to be replaced at the workshop.
So I hope the above answers some of the more generic questions, for anyone who is interested the next batch of hoods are due in Mid to End of June
If you have any queries please do email me via the m100hoods website as these are now forwarded direct to my smartphone so you should receive a much quicker response!
Cheers
Mark
P.S When I can work out how to upload pics I will put some images up of a S1 and S2 which were recently completed.
