Bumper Repaint

Postby andy123 » Wed 15.08.2012, 20:38

Wondered if anybody knows how much it would cost (approximately) to have a front and rear bumper repainted on a NMY. One for sale in the classifieds with slight cracking of the gel coat, just trying to assess total cost of the car including paint rectification. I'm located West of London I understand there is a recommended fibreglass paintshop near Reading although need to dig out the details - might have been recommended on LEC or TVR forum. - anybody got any recommendations?

If you are just talking bumpers then there are some variables but any paint shop should be able to paint them as most modern cars have similar bumper material

The original bumpers are plastic so there is no gel coat as such and need special primers to get the paint to adhere to the plastic and the paint also needs plasticiser to allow the paint to flex with the bumper something that can get missed and the paint will then crack and can flake off.

As for cost it depends on a number of factors, if the bumpers are removed from the car by your self they will be a lot cheaper to paint than if they are on the car and it also depends if you want them colour matched as it may require the paint blended to the original paint.

Piece of string.

Had my front one done when a guy damaged it and he was paying but cost £750.00 but they did a "proper job" but hood cover, boot lid and spoiler were £350.00 which I had done on a spare parts to fix the lifting laquer on the originals.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the very detailed response, I had assumed that the bumpers were Fibreglass (or is it GRP) like the rest of the car.

Based on on those figures it sounds like it could be quite expensive to get both bumpers done properly, your figures certainly give me some food for thought.
