5 stud conversion

Postby bobbrown » Sun 30.09.2012, 11:09

Now here's a thought convert the hubs to take a 5 stud wheel.

I can do it to accept Subaru rims and some of theses are 53mm offset and are available secondhand for not too much money.
It would require changing front and rear hubs, rears are easy as it is just a case of modifiying the hubs I do to accept a 5 stud wheel and I have a solution for the front with a modified front hub that accepts the Elan drive shafts (33 spline) and is machined to accept the Elan wheel bearing and the Subaru 5 stud wheels (100mm PCD).

Not sure if the standard front brakes can be used but the rears should not be a problem all be it the discs will need to be drilled to a 5 bolt pattern.
Cost of the front hubs is going to be around £150.00 the pair with out bearings

Any thoughs ?

Yes, about a million

Do you think the Hi Specs can be used?
This conversion would certainly expand the market for after market wheels ;-)

Apart form the ever appreciated initiative, it's good to see you posting again and you have new ideas! This can only be the bearer of more relaxed times for you I hope.

Hi Spec front brake upgrades, at least mine will not be a problem as they already use Subaru discs on the front.
Standard brakes will just need the extra holes for 5 stud.
Hi Specs own conversion will be a different story

Don't worry, Bob has always got umpteen ideas on the go, and throwing a thought into the forum is the best way to find out if it's worth spending time on. :burnout:

With all due respects to you and in the circumstances, I don't think your advice to Denny of "Don't worry" will be received very well!

I think you might benefit from going and reading the topics that Denny has provided links to. Also try the last few posts posts on this thread and you might get even further insights into the issues that some of us, including Denny, are faced with.

You are correct to say that I had not had insite into your problems  , and I am suprised at your predicament.
Bob does take on a lot, and everything is thought through to the enth degree, resulting in a proper job.

My own front suspension arms were badly rusted, and I had them re manufactured by an engineer / mechanic
who looks after Roy Salvadores Maserati. There is nothing to stop others from taking a similar direction, but of course,
that is only half of your dilema.

My appologise if I upset anyone with my comments, but Bob is a first rate LEC member, and has proved his worth
to many of us over the years

You wouldn't be saying that if you had invested £495 in Bobs other projects and received nothing in return after 2 years!

Denny

Take no notice, it's a deliberate wind up. In particularly bad taste as well.

Note is being taken!!

Roland & Denny:

I think Brat_boy is seriously interested as he spent a long time asking how to do just this and Bob kept telling him that it wasn't feasable.

I don't think he understands the other issues, so cut him some slack.

Before this gets really out of hand, I'm going to step in and lock this topic.

It is clear that there are strong feelings out there, and some people have more 'insight' than others, and have the "benefit" of being around this forum for long enough to know a bit more than newer members.....

That said, I don't want to see things getting personal (which is where this may be headed), and will limit the possibility of litigation by stopping it here.

Suffice to say, to those who are genuinely interested in this project, it isn't likely to be progressed on this forum at this time - but that isn't to say that such things aren't possible, or availlable elsewhere (in time).

For now, it ain't happening here.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?
