Umm, thanks for that. I paid £36.40 (ex vat) for one in Sept 09 and £231.64 (ex vat) for a CAS in May 10! Me thinks I need to keep a watch on my mechanic!

Epipete, from Paul Matty's, I think I have shares in the company by now, it is rumoured that before the recession they were going bust until I bought my Elan, now they have more (of my) money than they know what to do with!

You can't expect your mechanic to keep up with private sales from the likes of Lotus. You should watch the Aftersales offerings and after discussing with your mechanic what you need or will need in the near future, get whatever is on sale and provide them to the mechanic for installation. That way, you don't pay any markup and you know you got the best price available.

I have hear rumours that there will be a new Aftersales offering soon.

Granted, John; At the time I hadn't been in Élan ownership that long and was a little more naive than now (I hope!)

Nothing is easy in this world is it? Decided that the mechanic at my local garage could probably change the HES better than me, (particularly as it was raining) and would only want a couple of beers for his time, so off comes the plastic cover, at which he says there is a lot of play in that (pointing to what I assume is a timing wheel, 3" diameter with notches on) so he unbolts the assembly from the engine and says "what's that" (with a few more expletives ) and proceeds to put a magnet into the camshaft hole and pulls out a jagged but a bit rounded lump of metal about the size of half of a frozen pea. This appears to have broken off of the bit that goes from the timing wheel into the camshaft hole, rendering the wheel rather wobbly, which could well be why the CAS fault code kept coming on. Suffice to say, new CAS arriving a week on Monday when hopefully the engine light will not go on and off anymore. I will keep you posted

Wherever did you find a NEW CAS? They have been unobtainium for quite a while. If you found a source, members will be thankful for any details as to where to get one. Thanks!

I called the chap at SJ Sports cars, explained the problem, he was really helpful and said he had seen that before and that a new CAS was obselete from Lotus but he had one on order from Japan (I assume Isuzu) so he offered to order an extra one and says it will be with me a week on Monday.

Last talk with Isuzu found that the CAS had been discontinued although a lot of companies still listed it. Just to be safe, look around for a suitable used one so you aren't surprised in a few weeks to find they don't exist. That said, maybe Isuzu has found a new source and has reinstated the part. Thanks for letting up know to go back and ask again.

I truly hope the CAS arrives on time. I am in the US and all Lotus parts are scarce. We checked with the Isuzu warehouse on the West Coast several years ago and was told they were gone for good. Like I said, maybe there has been enough demand that Isuzu had some more made. Any chance of a few pictures of what you found when you tore it apart? I believe there is a decent write-up on a full overhaul of a CAS on LEC - maybe in the WIKI? It would be nice to compare your photos to the rebuild photos. Thanks!

WOW! The main shaft split! can you tell if the thru pin is way oversized and it was forced into the bore cracking the shaft? The write-up I read suggested using a drill bit shaft as a pin replacement. I can't find that post but it would tell you what the correct diameter of the pin should have been.

I have no reason to believe that this isn't the original part, the car has been standing for 12 years, only been driven for the first 8 and so far it all seems as per the original spec.

But a forty quid hike in two years seems about expected - 17% approx in these low inflation days.

Still WOW. When you are finished with it, would you consider selling it? I don't want to spend a lot, but I would love to have one to take apart and don't want to open up any good ones I have collected.
