Oil pipe and wastegate

Postby tomatcbl » Sun 30.09.2012, 00:43

I have lost considerable boost on my Elan - and am planning to do the wastegate wiggle. But have a couple of questions before proceeding. The oil supply to my turbo comes from up from the engine and passes in front of the turbo rather than behind as I have seen in the manuals - having tried to get the three bolts holding the actuator on, the oil supply pipe is in the way (see attached photo) - so a couple of questions

1) The union of the supply pipe a union that appears to be steel and copper - if I undo the junction, what sealant if any should I use to rebuild.
2) The vacuum supply on my turbo goes through a brass valve before it connects to the actuator - the valve is adjustable, but it is not clear to me what I should use to determine whether it is adjusted correctly. Before the wastegate became stuck, the guage shows max boost of about 8-9 psi
3) Any clues on getting the bottom of the three bolts on the actuator flange out? Or better, back in.

Hi Tom!

If a wastegate wiggle will work for you, than that would be an easy solution!

1. If you remove them, use new copper washers, no other sealant. Make sure that the mating surfaces are clean and keep them free from scratches. The copper rings are soft and will make the high temperature seal that is needed.
2. Can you supply a picture? This sounds like a manual boost controller to me ( a 'controlled' leak in the actuating line to the wastegate actuator). DO a forum search on MBC and learn before you act :-) If it was my car, I would remove it...
3. If you don't mind a few minor cosmetic features, you can grab the actuator rod from above with a pair of pliers and wiggle the rod axial over approx 15 mm's. I did this just a couple of minutes ago on Peter's car. Then there is no need to undo the bracket. You can use the bracket as a lever while wiggle 8)

Most of all: Have fun!

Photo of the valve is attached - it is a bronze block, with the vacuum line in at the bottom, and a line out (orange tube) on the side that connects directly with actuator. The top of the valve appears to have an adjustment screw with a double nut locking system. The valve is not attached to anything - the tubing keeps the valve "in place." Insights appreciated.

It looks like a home made manual boost control valve to me? The gauge should read a standard 0.65 bar at maximum boost (if you have an accurate gauge). Basically the valve creates a small leak in the system which fools the turbo into a higher boost to compensate? I remember reading about this somewhere on here but can't find it now.
Try shutting the valve. This may solve what you think is a stuck wastegate?

As in 2 per above. Definately looks like a bleedvalve!

You can also wiggle in situ when you grab the actuator rod with a pair of pliers

With valve removed, boost remains practically non-existent - I thought it worthwhile trying the wiggle without removing the actuator first as described in HJ2's post - any details on direction of movement, or distance?

Yes. Use the bracket as a lever for your pliers, and move the rod to the left for approx. 1.5 cm. (but you'll feel it when it reaches the end)
Since you need to overcome the resistance of the dome inside the actuator, make sure you'll have enough grip.

However, if the gate is stuck in the open position... (and therefore no or little boost?) things are the other way around. :-D

I wiggled mine recently and at first really struggled getting the lower bolt back in - very little skin was left on one thumb! However whilst the car was in the air having hispecs fitted I tackled it from underneath and as long as you start with this one things get real easy ( I do have small hands mind) but was all back together in a few minutes

Problem solved. Wiggling the wastegate directly from the actuator rod without taking the actuator off worked fine for me. Certainly an easier option. Are there downsides to this approach?

Congrats!

Side effects.. Besides some scratches on the rod... None that I can think off :D
