Piper should be ashamed at sending that out, all shiny on the outside shite on the inside, hope you managed to fix the heat shield back,

i also need a new flexi , i fitted the exhaust reversed out of the garage and the neighbour had parked directly opposite, so one wheel dropped of the curb, heard a horrible bang, my brand new shiny exhaust was smashed in, all the neighbour said was i pay my road tax i can park where ever i want, love thy neighbour, not a chance

Well, temperatures are falling in the Netherlands as well.
Yesterday i took the Elan for a spin and.... boostcreep!  Aaaaahg...

Next job: Porting wastegate to an even bigger port than the first time
This project creep is starting to irritate me .

This however implies that the downpipe realy improves things.

Sorry to hear of your irritation with this, after so much good work, but it might also suggest the wastegate is not able to work as efficiently with this downpipe for some reason.
I can't remember - has Steve Mathews had boostcreep with the impressive gains from the Knox downpipe (which has v carefully considered wastegate flow)? Maybe Steve M doesn't use his elan in cold air conditions.
I don't want to clog your excellent thread by this, but two things come to mind
1) there is still potential for performance gain by improving intercooling arrangement to provide consistent cool air throughout the yr.
2) if induction air is causing problems by being too cool - the intercooler could be made less efficient for winter months. This could be done simply by placing something in front of it, black card or plastic or even a simple variable arrangement as you can get for household air vents would work.
Less invasive than enlarging wastegate further and easily reversable if it don't work.
Just a thought.

Hmmmzzz..

Any other experiences from people who did the piper downpipe conversion they would like to share?
Or it's back to the 2CV days....

with boost creep, I would always fit the compressor hose direct to the WG actuator - by passing the boost control valve and go straight to base boost- and try it - just to confirm that it is creep and not the BCV etc..
if it still creeps - then ok, get the grinding stone out, but if it behaves itself in base boost mod. - then i,ve fitted a valve to the BCV vent port to act as an adjustable choke ( fully closed = base boost - fully open is where you are at the moment - somewhere inbetween is the choke size you need for all that lovely cold air)

and i,d try the suck test on the actuator - just to make sure the actuator diaphram isn't leaking
both tests may proove nothing other than the bits are working and hence the issue is boost creep

Porting wastegate to an even bigger port than the first time

How big have you gone so far?

I went from 16 to 20mm

and have boost creep

I've not been out for a few weeks as my oil cooler has popped, I just need to find the time to swap it over

I have downpipe and 2 1/4 system - twice on cold days I have had a fuel cut out - engine light on for about 10 seconds then everything fine again. This didn't happen when it was warm so will see how things go in the summer..

This happened to me the other day but I don't have the downpipe but do have the 2 1/4 system. When it happened I thought it might have
something to do with the problem I've been experiencing in my post in Exhaust section:

just an observation  but the air is cold and dense at the moment doing exactly what the intercooler is designed to do, to give a better charge. so that might be the cause of the boost creep problem :?:

Yup and that is exactly why i started talking about porting, irt the cold air outside;-) There is nothing wrong with the intercooler :-)

I have a picture of mine if it is any help. Piper downpipe with piper exhaust, it is not as close to the sump as it seems.

What a coincidence!

Just this year I started at my new job as a wind tunnel engineer at the aerodynamics dept. of the Technical University of Delt, Aeronautics !
One of these weeks I will bring my downpipe and discuss what can be improved for a low budget ;-)

Perhaps Piper will adapt the design.

To be continued again!
