Advice please - hood contact with stowage lid

Postby e42 » Tue 16.04.2013, 20:45

Hi all,

I am the proud new owner of a S1, a great car and looking forward to lots of miles!

I have a few questions (!), but to kick off - the 'seal' at the base of the rear of the hood has perished and seems to be chafing the lid of the stowage compartment.

Can anyone recommend a replacement? I want to catch it asap to stop any damage.

Thank you,

Dom

Check eBay as I just picked one up there and I believe there could be more for sale.

Even when replaced it will likely still chafe. I haven't checked the condition of mine but there is evident rash, although on a 20-year-old paint job its nothing too concerning.

However we've also recently discussed leather covers for the hood stowage compartment or a plastic wrap to protect the paint work. I am looking into the latter for both the front bumper and this area and will advise further on that thread although I would suspect I'll end up doing this myself or going to a local fitter.

Hi Dom
Welcome to L E C ,as Jeemy said in the last post they all do it ,and leave a line on the paint ,mine isn't too bad and isn't that noticeable but it's there all the same I personally think a clear cover would be the way to go

As I have had some stripes added recently I place a cloth where the good contacts when the hood is up but it has still marked after two days - leather cover would be good if it does the job

Would you say your rear seal is especially perished or pretty smooth? Will look at mine in a sec when the weather clears.

I am awaiting a call back from cabads.co.uk which appears to be owned by First Display who it turns out I've used for several large format print jobs over the years.

They are able to fit nationwide and are going to give me a rough price on wrapping the front bumper/bonnet/etc with clear stone protective film, and also the back tonneau cover, and whether they could supply precut film & instructions or whether it would be fit-only.

Then we can see how many people might be interested and look at a Group Buy.

I think Lotus sold film protectors for the rear arches? One of the cars I looked at many years ago had them and I took templates from it - before the dealer threatened me with a Glasgey kiss
Must have them somewhere if they are of use.
Unfortunately clear is no longer suitable for me  maybe NMY is an option :bananasex:

I am at present having some clear plastic strips made up to stick to the hood cover to prevent the seal scratching the paintwork. Will post some pictures when done and possibly set up a group buy if there is enough interest.

Cabads never got back to me. I will be picking my van up next week from the electrical specialist and round the corner there is a high end bodyshop/ custom shop. i'll nip in and ask them for a recommendation.

I don't like giving business to people who don't return sales calls, when you are trying to give THEM money and they act like you're a pain, I don't push it, either the job isn't right for them and they couldn't be bothered telling me or they are not versed in good customer service, either way they aren't the right supplier for me.....
