It depends on wether you want a "concours" vehicle with a new sump or you repair your existing one and make it more robust in the process.
I am inclined to the latter course of action .
However I also wish to express my thanks to all who have put in time and trouble to investigate this issue especially if they are not in need at the present time.
I would also be willing to participate in a future group buy (depending on price) if it happened

Me too
My first course of action will be to get mine repaired. I believe I have found a local company who can repair it once I get it off!

I spoke with the Lotus Parts group and asked what was happening on the Oil Sump issue and was told that they have two outstanding orders at Isuzu: the earliest order (last year) is for 4 and then another more recent is for 10. The received a stock order from Isuzu as recently as last week - NO, Parts are not held up due to financial issues - and the sumps were still not in the order they received.
I passed on the info I received from the Japanese Broker and Lotus will have their buyer contact Isuzu and verify if Isuzu will continue production (or is the story I received correct) and when can they expect delivery of the outstanding orders for 14 sumps.
I should get an email with the results within the week and we will all know whether sumps are the newest part to collect and hoarde.
Regardless, I will pay closer attention to the good, used sump market in the US as there are several breaker yards offering sumps at reasonable prices. The GEO sump is not close to the ground, so they don't get mangled as easily as the M100. I will also try to confirm the interchange details as they show around 6 different makes and models that use the same sump. I don't know if the SOHC sump is the same as the DOHC sump even though their listings group them all together.

John it seems rather strange that Isuzu would have ceased production of the sump if it is the same for 6 differing (all be it old) models. Does this suggest that they are not universal?

In the US, car makers abandon models all the time. When GM abandoned the Isuzu models, they ceased providing parts for any of them. I believe the US only requires parts support for around 10 years after final production.
A large number of GEO, Chevy and Isuzu cars used the 1.6L and they could be either the SOHC version or the DOHC. I have ordered a parts Fiche for the GEO series from 1990 thru 1993 and will hopefully be able to confirm what pieces interchange. Meanwhile, breaker yards screw up interchange information all the time and somehow, it become gospel although often wrong.
I can find over 100 GEO Storm sumps using a national search engine and they are labeled SOHC, DOHC GSI and whatever and all show as being interchanges.
I will consider getting a few once I figure out what is correct for our needs.

Firstly, good work BCN!
Secondly, I've also contacted a company who make skid plates who claim to have 1400 different versions and or fitment kits - R.A.D. designs.
I've asked for the Elan or an MGF if not - that should be close, right?
Its weird the parts situation - SJ told me I'd have my nuts ASAP, and then went (more) silent (than usual). I called after being told they were a back order that would not arrive until August, and he told me if I'd been told that, it was 'probably true'. Thank god for SW Lotus who have helped me out of an impossible parts spot. I also spoke to one firm who said they in fact provided the parts to another firm we all use, i.e. they ordered on their behalf.
I haven't asked anybody anything about sumps; I'll leave that in your guys capable hands and chime in when I know more about the kick plates.

OK Christine at RAD is looking into it, I've said at least 6-10 of us, perhaps 10-20, will want skid plates.
Paul can you help out with your manufacturer, anybody else is welcome to chime in and once I get a test piece I can take it up to Geo Brown engineering who did my charge cooler and we'll look at a custom skidplate.
Not to derail this topic further I have started a new one here to count potential numbers for skid plates:

Don't know if this is of use to anyone, but the original manufacturer sticker is still stuck firmly to my sump.
It states:
9/97031-019/0
No. 128464
Tokyo Radiator MFG Co Ltd
Have found their website but it is helpfully all in Japanese with no translation or switch to English
I did find a page with pictures and English text of their product portfolio, but the subsequent oil pan page just gave more pictures and Japanese script and no further links.

Maybe they won't make Isuzu pats?

I contacted the sump manufacturers in Japan a few months ago with the correct part number, only to be told that they will not supply direct, but to contact Isuzu. Back to square one.
