Central Locking, Alarm, etc Identification

Well….I have it….in that if you lock one door, the other locks on a solenoid.

But how to activate it remotely? I was never given keyfobs, just a straight key for ignition, doors/boot, and glove compartment.

Would there be a code written on the ECU or alarm module I could reference and have new remote fobs made?

Mine had a new remote at some point but they would have had the original to copy from.

I imagine the first step is to identify the make of the alarm ... the manufactures might then be able to help.

If I am reading it right (which I am not), its a Motorola Alarm.

This was behind the passenger seat.

Referencing this against the paperwork I received with the car, it would appear this is a Tracker module. The code cross-references to the paperwork for a Tracker installation completed 05/06/98 and has a safety check sticker from 1998 on the side.

There is a second, tape-wrapped module which sits on it - above in the picture as I removed it to access this info. The two can be screwed down using the same two screws.

I also have paperwork for a Cobra car alarm fitted to the car in 1996. It would appear I have not located this module yet - if it was even still present.

I think its unlikely that there was a factory alarm - according to the Electrical manual there would have been an indicator light under the handbrake lever - this is not present.

I will call Tracker on Monday to work out if the module still works and can be re-activated.

The Mazda garage who fitted the car alarm appears to have closed down.

If I've disconnected and reconnected the battery without ever hearing anything its possible the Cobra alarm is no longer fitted.

Tracing back the central locking wiring may be possible and give me some further clues.

Jeemy - I used to work at TRACKER and so I am very familiar with this unit. The one you describe is either a TRACKER Monitor (with a shrink-wrapped unit screwed to the end) - which includes a motion sensor that alerts TRACKER if your elan is moved with the ignition off OR a TRACKER Horizon (if both units are the same size) - this is a GPS based system in addition to the Monitor unit. TRACKER use a dedicated network that is less susceptible to jamming.

I (personally) would remove the photo of the unit. Whilst this is an older type product, we shouldn't make things too easy for those who would like to steal our cars!

Thanks for the info Max.

It has a shrink-wrapped (well, overwrapped with tape) metal unit inside a plastic box screwed to it, from memory. I examined it a bit more closely and it looks like a battery pack. It is about 70% of the size and its plastic surround about 80%.

I've removed the photo as you suggest.

I also spoke with Tracker who confirmed the unit is no longer active. While I am sure if pushed they could reinstate it they of course wanted to sell me a Tracker Locate unit - coming in at £309 plus £153 installation then £174 subscription per annum.

While a nice idea, its pretty far down my list of priorities and gets me no further to remote activation of the central locking.

I will certainly contact you before going ahead with any tracker-based installation.
