Nippy, if we go with the new guys manufacturing in the EN8 or EN16 carbon steel, 6-8 weeks. If we go with the original guys who made both the steel (carbon or not, 16 or 8, I know not) and the aluminium (which apparently has pluses, and minuses, and they will make both if we want them - they say there is no stud issue as they can insert hardened threads) it could be a lot quicker as they have the plans and experience already.

They've suggested making the main batch from steel and half a dozen sets in aluminium. Numbers, numbers please and I hope to have final prices with bearings pressed in and sealed, together with discs and shipping, within 48 hours.

Awesome mate, be great to meet you. I was hoping to reveal it in more dramatic style on my thread, but when she comes back from spray, the Lotus will no longer be on ramps outside my studio - I have an indoor workshop for doing my paint/engine bay restoration work!

So East Lothian it will be! Can't wait!

Jeemy, what are the minuses of aluminium and would they cost the same?

I know if you hard anodize aluminium, it becomes VERY corrosion resistant, a distinct advantage over steel, which always corrodes around brake parts due to the heat generated, any paint burns away quite quickly, just look at any hubs, or discs that haven't been used for even a few days!

I'm no engineer. As I understand it the very first ("beta test") run of these was created in aluminium and I think it is Ray is still running on these quite happily. The aluminium is lighter but there was worry from the memberbase about the threads pulling out. This is something I have been assured isn't an issue as hardened threads could and would be embedded.

Bob had used these on race and rally cars quite happily and this is what he based the design on. But the feeling was that uptake would be a lot higher with the steel and thats what ended up happening.

I am waiting for the last price and this includes an aluminium option so I will update you as soon as I can. I'd personally prefer aluminium - shinier.

I will advise once I have final prices and weights in hand. Rough guess is say I bring the hubs, bearings and seals in at £150 GBP and weight is approx 10kg package, £30-40 GBP via UPS.

OK,

Here is official pricing info.....

Carbon Steel Hubs (per pair): £130.48
Aluminium Hubs Alum Alloy 6082 (per pair): £108.57
Aluminium Hubs Alum Alloy 2014 (per pair): £129.57

This price is based on a total order of 20 pair carbon steel, plus 5 pair aluminium.

The aluminium versions include hardened inserts in the threads, the Aluminium 2014 is a high tensile grade normally used for F1 and aircraft so is less likely to bend if given a knock, its similar in strength to steel. There are some dimensional differences in the aluminium version to add strength but this does not affect the customer or fitting parameters.

Price does not include bearings and seals, we could fit premium grade bearings and seal for £15 +VAT per hub, cheaper bearings are available but I would not recommend or fit them. These are precision taper roller bearings so we would fit them in a positive pressure clean room.

The steel hub is of a suitable steel for hubs that we have determined with our experience over the years of making many types of hubs from Ferrari to go cart hubs, because of this it’s not necessary to quote for any other grade of steel.

This cost includes all VAT & shipping in bulk via pallet courier to my workshop in Scotland. They can be collected there or individually packed and sent onwards at a cost I would estimate of approx £7 shipping plus approx £3 packing; I will hold it to £10.

Taking total approximate cost for steel or high-grade aluminium hubs, bearings, shipped to your door to £180.

At present we have 15 uptake for the hubs and I propose we go for a first order of 20 steel and 5 high-grade aluminium, so please continue to copy the list below. Once target total is reached we will place the order and close the list, delivery will be approx 4 weeks. If anyone is desperate we can get a couple of pairs out in advance of this date. Once we reach 20 pairs of steel we'll keep aluminium open for a couple of weeks but if we can't fill the minimum order, either I will take on and hold the excess for latecomers or higher-cost eBay sale with a donation to LEC, or we may have to not go ahead with the alu hubs. 5 isn't many, and some people may want to go with the cheaper alu hubs given the saving. I'll take a set of both, and will evaluate offset increase on one set.

Please update the lists below and mark against it whether you DO NOT want bearings. I can't see why you wouldn't for the cost and quality of fitment. If you don't mark it will be assumed you want bearings fitted.

NO offset is being considered right now.

All I have, is the following.

LOTUS HUB1 (material carbon steel BS970)
LOTUS HUB1 (material Alum Alloy 6082)
LOTUS HUB1 (material Alum Alloy 2014)

…and what is quoted above.

Certificates of conformity can be produced for £7.50 per item which I don't mind covering should you require them.

These are the same people who produced every run that BB did, so they are thoroughly road-tested, I believe there's an aluminium set from 2007-08 still going strong and steel sets from 2008, 2009, 2011 on people's cars right now.

I am going with these guys because (a) the price is right - lots of people were a bit taken aback when the aerospace guys were quoting £95 per hub - (b) they've done it before so there is no to-ing and fro-ing and © I am comfortable with them as they are professional enough to have all their plans on file and so forth.

If there are any other questions you need me to ask please let me know, the aerospace guys were keen to sell direct but this guy is keen to sell in bulk; while I am not an engineer, they are! So I am comfortable I am not taking any liabilities with safety whatsoever but am happy to query whatever you need queried. Let me know.

Mechanical Property Value
Proof Stress 170 MPa
Tensile Strength 260 MPa
Elongation 19 %
Shear Strength 170 MPa
Hardness Vickers 75 HV

Properties above are for material in the T4 conditionAluminium alloy 6082 is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys. Alloy 6082 is known as a structural alloy. In plate form, 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. As a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of 6082 has seen it replace 6061 in many applications. The addition of a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure which in turn results in a stronger alloy.
It is difficult to produce thin walled, complicated extrusion shapes in alloy 6082. The extruded surface finish is not as smooth as other similar strength alloys in the 6000 series.
In the T6 and T651 temper, alloy 6082 machines well and produces tight coils of swarf when chip breakers are used.

Applications
6082 is typically used in:
~ Highly stressed applications
~ Trusses
~ Bridges
~ Cranes
~ Transport applications
~ Ore skips
~ Beer barrels
~ Milk churns

Alloy Designations
Aluminium alloy 6082 also corresponds to the following standard designations and specifications:

AA6082

HE30

DIN 3.2315

EN AW-6082

ISO: Al Si1MgMn

A96082

Temper Types
The most common tempers for 6082 aluminium are:

T6 - Solution heat treated and artificially aged
O - Soft
T4 - Solution heat treated and naturaly aged to a substantially stable condition
T651 - Solution heat treated, stress relieved by stretching then artificially aged
Supplied Forms
Alloy 6082 is typically supplied as Channel, Angle, Tee, Square bar, Square box section, Rectangular box section, Flat bar, Tube and Sheet

Plate and shate can also be supplied as 6082-T651

Extrusions
Bar
Plate
Sheet
Tube
Weldability
6082 has very good weldability but strength is lowered in the weld zone. When welded to itself, alloy 4043 wire is recommended. If welding 6082 to 7005, then the wire used should be alloy 5356.

Weldability – Gas: Good

Weldability – Arc: Good

Weldability – Resistance: Good

Brazability: Good

Solderability: Good

Fabrication
Workability - Cold: Good

Machinability: Good
