Melted roads rash

Postby P@ulW » Wed 24.07.2013, 08:19

Can anyone recommend something to get the tarry rash off my car that the recent hot weather has produced. I'm a bit nervous about scrubbing away at the gel coat, but NMY + bitumen acne is not a good look.

Hi Paul,

In the past I have used 'proper' tar remover with good results, but the chemicals can be considered a tad harsh....

...I've also had good results with paraffin or diesel - just wipe on, leave it to soften the tar deposits, and wipe off.

Basically, it just needs something to 'dilute' the bitumen until it becomes gooey enough to unstick from the paintwork without scrubbing.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

If you can get a good paste wax on her prior to the tar then all that is
required is a good detail spray like Mcguires. It works well for me with
tar and blemishes from track days and that annoying road tar.

Thanks, Dave and Steve
The car was well waxed, but now looks quite diseased, so I'll give paraffin a go and then wax it again. I've just had to whack out on a new radiator (Cool Experts) and exhaust (Piper) so I feel I ought to cosset the car to justify the expense.

Try Autoglym tar remover. Failing that a rag lightly doused with petrol also works for me
