Hope you are keeping well. Thank you for the old intercooler!! I am having trouble getting under an M100 to look at the positioning. I see that you had a bigger one made. I was going to make the tanks the full width of the fixing screws front and back and get the core as wide and deep as the top and bottom tanks. is there room to go any larger or is the outer size of the intercooler the maximum size?

Please PM me.

Kindest Regards

Hi Steve,

Written descriptions are often misunderstood without the benefit of pictures, so my apologies in advance if I’ve misunderstood what you wrote…so, with that said,

On my Fed Elan, the intercooler is positioned with the tanks as “end-tanks” as opposed to top and bottom. Using the stock shroud, the outer perimeter size is pretty much at its maximum. (Also, as the opening in the stock shroud is smaller than the perimeter of the intercooler, probably limited benefit of going larger in the perimeter?) The end-tank towards the center of the car, and part of the core, is actually positioned behind the radiator, and in that section the solid shroud is in front of the intercooler and behind the radiator.

On the back side the core can be as deep as the tanks – in fact there is ~3/4 of an inch clearance between the tanks themselves and the nearest limiting obstruction (the anti-roll bar). On the front the core can be deepened to be flush with the front of the tanks – it would just require removal of a rubber gasket from the stock shroud which is there as the thinner stock intercooler core is inset from the front of the tanks

If it would help, I can take pictures this evening which would be tomorrow morning your time.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the offer. We now have the pattern from Mulley and next Wednesday our good friend Wooody is bringing his car to us and it is going up on a ramp for a close inspecion. I am going for the largest core possible in the space available. I will keep you all informed of our progress.

Steve,

That's fantastic - the design and fabrication on the radiator you sent is top shelf so I'll look forward to this as well.

Hi Peter,

Reference your previous post!! My comments were a hang up from the old days of our industry where all radiators etc ran from top to bottom!! When cars became lower on the bonnet the industry decided to go "crossflow" with radiator intercoolers condensers etc being laid on their sides for extra space, the industry carried on calling the distance between the two tanks the height, the inlet tank the top and the outlet tank the bottom. For total confusion the height is now the width and the the width is the height. The top tank can be on the left or the right and the bottom tank can be on the right or the left. We have got around the confussion by describing a core measurements as distance distance beween tube plates or tanks and tubes high on a crossflow cooler or width on a verticle core.
It has taken me 20 years to get to grips with this so I would think I have most probably totally confused all members reading this

Regards

Hello All,

Whilst I was away Woody came to in to my place and my staff examined the intercooler position on his car. We have calculated that we can increase the depth of the cooler from 52mm / 2.047 inchs to 70mm 2.755 inches. The tube hight would increase from 145mm / 5.708 inches to 180mm / 7.087 inches. The distance between plastic air tanks will remain at 290mm / 11.417 inches. The top and bottom tanks will be replaced with folded and TIG welded aluminium section. The tank will increase in both the of the tube plate dimensions. However the depth of the tanks will be kept to match the positions of the 4 threaded bosses in the 2 existing plastic tanks. I have ordered an initial 6 cores, 4 units are promised to the lads from the Belgium Forum who will be here in August for the Lotus meet at Brands Hatch. Time has moved on since 2010 and we have a new vat Rate coupled with material increases. The cost for a single upgraded intercooler would be £295.00 to the members. There would be a discount for any orders of 3 plus. I will keep you all posted and get a picture of the intercooler on the site as soon as I have one.

Regards

Hello all

!!!! IT IS HERE !!!!

it is pure coincidence that our intercooler looks to be identical to the one on Mulleys car.

I have enclosed some pictures of the existing type and the newer type to enable you to see the extra cooling fin that is available in the model. You will see that although the overall size is larger the length has been maintained, the fixing bosses are in the same positions and the height of the tanks has not altered. I see from Jim,s (Mully) photograph that he has trimmed the plastic in the ducting to get maximum air flow through the intercooler. As we all know the colder and denser the induction air the better the fuel burn and power output. The cost is £295 plus shipping in the UK and Europe. The cost to the USA and rest of the work is £250 (without the UK sales tax) plus shipping. We are completing the first order of 3 to Peter from the Belgium forum and will have more available in within the next fortnight.

Regards

Looks beautiful!
I'm interested in air volume differences between this and the OEM unit.
Also, it would be nice to see MAT elanscan readings before/after.

Hi ccb056,

Try a PM to Mully, he has been running this model for some time now and may have the information you need.

Hi,

Sorry to say I did not take any 'before' readings.

At the time I installed it I simply wanted to have an intercooler that wasn't crumbling away.

I could take some 'after' readings - presumably from Elanscan?

Yeah, that would be great.

What's important is to note the air temperature outside (I do not think elanscan shows this) and the MAT (which is in elanscan).

With that information we can calculate the efficiency of the intercooler and compare that to stock.

Hi All

We are committed to attend the kit car show at Donington on the Bank holiday weekend and all our display equipment
will be on show there. However the huge response we have had from the various Lotus forums to display our items at the Lotus festival has persuaded us to take a stand in the trade village at Brands Hatch. We will be taking all of our M100 products to display along with the items that we manufacture for other Lotus models. We will be pleased to help any member of the various forums with information on cooling systems.

Steve, I definitely want one. Please put me on the list for the next fortnight's orders!

I will contact you by phone to place the order, or you can PM me through here, I have a backlog of about 20 to get through unfortunately.

So excited to get back into finishing my car. Should start work again next week. Feelsgoodman.jpg!

Side remark,

Our babys have a water connection on the throttle valve body.
So let's say that you get air from 50C from the aftercooler how much will it be heated up by the water temp of cooling water running thru the valve body ??

Anybody blocked the lines and saw a difference ?

Grtz

Dear fellow tinkerer's!

I am in the process of fitting this uprated intercooler to Peter's Elan.
First remark: A great piece of kit, beautifully finished, my compliments 8)

Now... I am trying to fit it in the narrow space available.
Since the uprated cooler is bigger from top to bottom (width in the old days if i have read this topic correctly  ) it interfers with the radiator support frame.

My questions: Does anyone have one of these fitted yet? Does it need to bet mounted on custom studs so it positions behind the rad supp. frame? Or is there another trick to fit it all in?

By the way, i removed the sway bar (i hope this is the correct part name) and now i have pretty good access to the space where the cooler goes.
I will place some pictures of the entire process when i'm done, but for now:

Help!

Hello There H32,

We coppied what we could see of the intercooler fitted to Jim's (Muly's) car. He has posted a picture of the intercooler and could possibly tell you what was needed to fit the unit. We would appreciate any recommendations on alterations to make the intercooler easier to fit. I am certain that the intercooler will improve the performance of the car having a greater cooling surface area to cool down the turbocharged air.
