New Victim

Postby wegsleepregeling » Sat 17.08.2013, 10:51

While I don't expect to be as much a victim as my last four-wheeled passion caused me to be (Audi ur-quattro, $25k in, $10k out, but absolutely the *bomb* to drive), I know I'm not playing in the shallow end.

Nonetheless, here I am! Greetings from San Francisco, California.

No M100 yet but am in process (which should take a couple of months, certainly) of wrenching my pal's M100 out of his hands. Red, one owner, low miles, well maintained, not yet in the registry. He's got way too many cars, and too many people in his family. My household consists of just the heiress and I, she's about 4.75 years old as of this date. Our manny takes the subway.

Mostly I'm tired of driving her around in my short-wheelbase, high roof, rack and shelves equipped sprinter van. The views are great, the performance is amazing, but I'm literally driving around in a toolbox. Not very relaxing on a road trip, even though the mileage can't be beat out of the Benz's I5 CDI. As a biker guy, slowly aging and parenting and medicating my way out of hooligan status (killed a BMW 1150GS clutch in 24k miles), the M100 seems a good cross-conversion from two wheels. I may even sell the GS, which is... I dunno, that bike is me and has been me for a long time.

Of my car history, aside from the Sprinter, all have been FWD or quattro/AWD. I grok understeer and oversteer freaks me the hell out. Last I tried performance driving in a RWD coupe was the mid-eighties, I was 16, in a friend's Datsun 240Z, and we spun nearly all the way around before thankfully coming to rest in the middle of the road.

Topics of current interest, for the acquisition and upgrading of my new ride, are likely expected enough as to be cliché at this point: brakes, hard top (I'm SOL, right?), respray (she's red but not terribly faded), headlights, chip, roll bar (see above: heiress). Exhaust when it's due, and for once I'm actually not happy with the stock wheels' aesthetics and may consider replacements to actually be money well spent. And Hallie H. Selassie, do they *all* leak in torrents, or is this more of a UK experience given the scope and quantity of downpours back in the old country? Oh, right, this is the introduction node. Ahem.

A good friend has an Evora and she hasn't let me near it. I've long been a Lotus fan, even my urq and A4QA were BR Green (ish). My uncle races SCCA vintage and thinks I'm crazy, but as his rides are Lolas and Crosleys I think I'm on the right track. I also quite appreciate that the M100 is the redheaded step-child of the marque, that kind of underdog status appeals to me (my eventual Ferrari will be a Dino, my Harley would be an Aremacci or AMF disaster, etc). It must be amusing to mess with the other Lotusistis' heads about it.

Thanks all for the resource, the brain-trust, the community. I've been lurking and reading on and off for a few weeks.

Might as well throw down with a jpg:

Great intro and welcome aboard. I look forward to following your journey into Lotus ownership.

Oh, and yes in my experience they all leak but then I've only owned one :D

They only leak if left outside when it rains.

Welcome to LEC. As an experienced biker who's still here to tell the tale, you've no doubt developed the defensive riding/driving awareness that will be important to driving an Elan - sizing up the field of vehicles around you and positioning yourself to stay out of harms way when a sudden/erratic/clueless move is made -as if they didn't see you- that bicyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers of small sports cars are familiar with. The Elan has great handling/grip - all I would caution is when driving spiritedly is have part of your brain focusing on where the weight and drive wheels are, especially when possibly lifting the throttle while in a turn.

Greetings from the land of Fremont, Ca. Welcome aboard!

You might want to look into the Golden Gate Lotus Club (GGLC). Seems like a good bunch of folks; they maintain an ambitious agenda of rides, track days, bbqs, etc. I have been a member for over a year and haven't actually done squat with them yet. And that would be my loss.

I'll probably turn 40K miles riding home this evening. I bought the car a year and a half a go with around 24K on the clock. I intended to drive the hell out of it and am doing so. We are fortunate to live in a part of the world that environmentally presents little risk to old car ownership. I wish you the very best with yours!

Thanks all!

I got to drive her last night. I'd never even ridden in a Lotus before then.

Lots of fun! Basically what I was expecting, maybe was hoping for more off the line. The turbo definitely has to spool, and of course, that can be worked with :)

About 49k on the clock. Headlights don't function 100% - one opens low, the other doesn't drop closed. Door panel material missing from one side, the concave bit. I don't much care about that though. The rest of the interior is really in lovely shape. Driver's window doesn't mate cleanly with the top rubber, it's kind of pushed out and makes for some noise at speed. It's definitely noisy, and I'll bust butt to figure out some sort of hard top. In fact, now that replicators are coming of age and quality (maker-bots) perhaps it's time to revisit bespoke hard tops, perhaps other items!

Leaking oil slowly, needs new lines. Topped it off with 10-30 I believe. Yes the brakes blow!! Handling was mighty and feels entirely natural. First car was a Mazda 626 2.0 five-speed and I never had trouble pushing it to the edge and then keeping it there. Didn't find an edge with the Elan, don't suspect I want to. And later Halidex/Torsen quattros have me spooked on that practice anyway - like driving on rails, you can push them harder and harder to no effect as each wheel looses grip. You don't even notice. When the last one looses grip though, you're immediately effed. All or nothing. Luckily 'all' is plenty! The old urq didn't have that problem, I've done dirt roads in the mountains where I was more sideways than not. A flick of the wrist to get it back onto the rails again when desired, but much more fun to drive using the door windows to watch the road. This is probably impossible on the Elan and I have no desire to make it possible. Totally different thing.

I've read the bits about a turbo blowoff valve, and can definitely feel the clunk when I lift off. The physics inside that turbine make my head spin. That'll probably be my first hack.

I've read a bit about LotusScan or whatever. I'm a big Scan Gauge fan and wish, but don't have high hopes that, the device works on this M100.

I'm thrilled there's a club in the bay area!

It's never really been parked outside, fortunately.
