Elan on track

Postby Russ_16v » Sat 31.08.2013, 15:43

Twice a year I do a track day at Llandow in Wales with the Clio club - it's just as much of a social thing as a track day, pretty much like the Lotus ones :)

I took it easy with the Elan, as it's on aged tyres and has done little the past few years, but apart from brake fade (Although it has 4 pots on the front, it has cheap pads) and the rear wheel bearings having play (nipped them up at the track, but will replace soon) she ran fantastic.

Did 3 laps with the roof up, (was drizzling on the way there) but the Sun came out and the roof didn't go back up until 7pm when I got home :)

Impressions on the Elan on track were good - very soft and a lot of lean, but it hangs on like anything and very playful with throttle inputs - it will behave how you wish, so nice and tidy is easy, where as oversteer is progressive and easy to catch and hold.

Bearing in mind it's 23 years old, it was a cracking laugh - can't wait until I have some better tyres on it :brum

Great pictures! It looks like you had a lot of fun. I was initially surprised how soft the suspension looks, but on reflection, it was very much designed as a road car, unlike the Elise which is more track focused, and therefore less comfortable (one of the main reasons I bought an Elan rather than an Elise).

I am struck by the fact that I can see the top of your helmet above the windscreen header rail in many of the pictures. In case you are interested, I have been working towards a group buy for roll hoops - see the Group Buy section.

Great pictures. You're braver than I taking your Elan on the track!
Thanks,
Neil.
