Hi,

Just two weeks ago I bought a 91 se, Steel Blue, 52k, which was very strange as I was looking for a Triumph Stag at the time! so a bit of an impulsive buy.
The car is in fair order with a new hood (not tried in the wet yet) and the only upgrade I can see that needs doing soon, would be the front brakes, although the chap I bought from said he had just fitted greenstuff pads and they have apparently a "wearing in" layer? but still a bit unbalanced.

I would like to get a hardtop for it, but they seem to be a bit rare on the ground, any advice there?

Welcome aboard you will find the elan much more fun than a stag I think. Have a search about the brakes as there are a few ways to deal with them, hispec, new servo, different pads to name a few (one of the best upgrades I have done)

Welcome to Elan ownership. I think you will find the Elan to be very impressive compared with a Stag.

The hardtop is a great thing, but a member here, Kuching, made only a limited number of them. You will find information on them in the Hood/Top and Bodywork section. Incidentally, one is currently for sale on this site.

As I have mentioned elsewhere, the moulds for the hardtop still exist, so more can be made, although at a price - probably £1500.

Personally, both are great cars - but totally different animals.

I've had a variety of Stags, and a couple of Elans - currently no Stags and only 1 elan (but 3 Dolomites).

I hope you enjoy the Elan and don't regret the decision - but I'm pretty sure that another drive in the Elan will soon put that right....

....in fact, the only time I think a Stag would definately be better is if you want more than 2 people in the car - otherwise both (when reliably sorted) will give endless smiles per mile for whatever journey you're on.

Are these tops still being made then?

Yes i had seen that blue Kuching top for sale viewtopic.php?f=3&t=22820#p287823...thinking about it...

Yes, I v'e already had the problem with having one person more than I have seats for So I said to my wife and daughter, thats it's a case of whoever gets in the passenger seat first!!

The alternative (which we ended up doing) is to buy another Elan and have a 'his & hers'....... that way we could still transport 2 kids with us and didn't end up fighting for the car keys when we went out

I haven't got it to fit to my satisfaction yet. I've had no time to spend time on it in the last couple of weeks.

The hardtops have always been made to order. I don't know if a minimum order is needed to justify a run being made (have you seen the miraculous Group Buys section yet?). I can put you in touch with the fabricator, if you wish.

Welcome! You must be quite local to our Southern Area Meet and one of our regular attendees (chris.t) has both an Elan and a Stag. It would be great to see you there.
