steering an oil tanker

Postby Rich10000 » Sun 15.12.2013, 20:48

hi all

last couple of weekends when i start the car from cold there seems to be no PAS ... it really does take a lot of effort to turn it round on the drive. but after a few hundred yards its fine. anyone experienced similar symptoms? whats gone wrong and whats the solution?

thanks

Have you checked the fluid level and belt condition/tighness? Is the pump any more noisy when it is not working well as compared to when it seems to be working?

fluid level is fine. no noise.... not even a hiss when the PAS is not working. i do get a belt screeching noise after driving through puddles..... could that be a belt to do with the PAS?

The belt could be worn or loose and when cold, not gripping as well? Try adjusting it and see if things improve.

Not specific as I don't know bolt sizes and all but the pump pivots on the top lh bolt with the adjustment afforded by a slotted bracket below. Loosen the top bolt a bit (so the pump and bracket will rotate) and do the same to the bottom bolt and rotate the pump away from the engine to make the belt tighter. Tighten the bottom bolt to hold the pump in place and then tighten the top bolt. You might need to remove the right hand whell arch cover to easily get to the lower bolt, but also might be able to reach it from above. It has been a long time since I changed my belts.

Someone that has done it recently will probably jump in and give specifics.
