Oil Pipe?

The above photo of the engine bay was taken looking from below the number plate to the OSF wheel.

My questions are:

What is the large coiled pipe? It would seem to be oil but I'm not sure, it's certainly not water or air is it? Could that be the water pump it's attached to?
Is this OEM (I have my doubts)? And if not, then I'm assuming that it is a bodge, what should there be in its place?

Pete: It seems to be a hose for the power steering pump as that is what it is going into on the top of the picture. It looks to be a bodge as the picture of the "hose, resevoir to pump" #38 seems to be crimped to the steel line and doesn't have the loop in it.

I think that you're right John, thanks. Although it is working there is a lot of leakage over the area, so much that I wasn't certain what it was but since I wasn't loosing oil it is possibly steering fluid, I'll have to examine further!

I'm keen to get everything back together as I'm currently multitasking (and though it's not master engineering - coolant hoses (nearly installed), gear cables (installed), Radiator mounts (almost ready to go back in) and fans (still boxed) - it's near the extent of my experience/skill set) and I fear it won't start when I next turn the key!

So, should this mini project work, the list of jobs to do grows:

1) Oil (Engine & Gearbox) Change
2) replace Oil Cooler Pipes
3) Check HG (although no performance issues I'm mindful of the condition of the coolant tank - a bit greasy inside!)
4) steering Pump pipe work

The bank manager doesn't worry me - but the wife does! (having ordered a new radiator this morning, I know how you feel) - oh, how cheap those AVO shock absortbers appeared to be last Spring, compared to how much I've actually spent whilst fitting them

Your coiled oil pipe recognised as the low pressure steering pump oil pipe 38, is still available as a "rebuild" by Power Steering Store http://www.powersteeringstore.co.uk/

Cliff in Germany had one made by them about 8-9 months ago, courtesy of a pattern pipe from Jeemy. They are very close to me and I paid a visit recently. They still have the pattern and can make a new one up for about £50 or so. I need one too at some point! Possible multi order discount??

Although as a low pressure pipe any suitable pipe of size and construction/spec will actually do!

I need to take a look at all the pipe work under there just to confirm what's what. But yes it seems that I shall require to replace this at some point although as it has all been working for the last 5 years that I've had it and probably a while before that it is somewhere lower in my list of priorities. But the price you quote is very good (look at what SJ's are asking) and if you are going ahead, then once I've checked down under, I shall join you and buy from them!

No rush: mine is iffy but not leaking! Got a few other jobs to continue imminently: rear hubs (Jeemy's), calipers/handbrake to sort and new slider on passenger window to install.

Yes he is able to make up at least one of the other pipes. However, when I spoke to him on my visit, he told me of something in confidence, which in fairness to them and another party I feel at this stage unable to reveal for commercial confidentiality reasons. All sounds a bit heavy but not intended to be.

I would have no problem in managing this group buy if there are enough people. Would need to speak to them again (ie dad not son!!), but of course it would all depend on the confidential bit being satisfactorily resolved/by-passed.

No real pricing yet (see indicative above for low pressure only), but feel free to add your name if you are interested.

Would suggest you add low pressure or full set (4 pipes?)to your name as applicable, so I have an idea of what to ask them for, talk about etc
