CAS bearing?

Postby adster » Thu 16.01.2014, 20:24

I started my car up today and there seems to be a worn bearing noise in the area of the CAS, now I'm not sure if there is a bearing inside there, or what else could it be?

It is technically not impossible.
I read several occasions where the shaft broke. I would check this first.

yes there is a bearing ...and a lip seal and another O ring that you can't see.

What type of noise is it making?

It's making a worn bearing type of noise!
Are the bearings available still?

You are aware that the magnetic pick-up generates a lot of force so you can feel and hear the individual tabs on the disc when you spin it by hand, right? :D

The CAS was never considered servicable except for the HES, so you will need to remove it, disassemble it and figure out what is gone wrong and if it needs a bearing or seal, you will need to measure what is there and try to find a replacement. That said, there was a company in Australia that was able to order a complete CAS part by part from somewhere and that is how Faraday was able to replace his unit with the broken shaft.

That topic is here: http://forum.lotuselancentral.com/viewt ... 32#p270917

If you want to see one disassembled, look here:

HJ: I think he is just hearing a grinding noise in the area of the CAS, he hasn't looked any closer. The HES might have failed or the magnetic pickup might be damaged as could be the bearings.

Deeper investigation is most likely necessary.

Make a little score line or Tipp-ex mark to, er, mark the position of the CAS assembly before removing it.

Once off, they're quite easy to disassemble - in the picture, the thin ring (top centre and to the left of the 4 screws) is actually a spring, which can be prised off with a blade, a screwdriver (if you're careful) or even a thumbnail.
The spring simply retains the little dowel/peg, which goes through the hole at the end of the main shaft and the part with the offset dogs that meshes with the end of the camshaft. After the dowel is pushed out, the whole lot just comes to pieces.
It's the little dowel/peg that I've seen break into 3 pieces in the past, and it completely mucks up your base timing, but it can be easily replaced with a sawn-off drill bit.
The thing to do is to test for any rotational movement between the big wheel and the bit with the dogs on at the opposite end of the shaft. The whole thing should rotate freely (or with just a tiny bit of magnetic resistance), but the ends shouldn't move in relation to one another.
The bearing (centre right) can be removed by putting the whole assembly in the freezer for a few hours, then putting it face down and pouring boiling water on the aluminium. The ali of the housing expands quicker than the steel of the bearing and then if you tap it on the bench a couple of times the bearing should just fall out.
If it doesn't come out cleanly immediately, simply re-freeze and repeat.
You'll either find a bearing number on it which can be matched up, or any decent bearing supplier should be able to supply a similar off the shelf item for a couple of quid.
Remember to freeze the new bearing before trying to drift it into the new housing with a suitably sized socket resting against the outer race, and don't let it go off-square or it'll lock solid and damage the mating surface of the housing.
Striking fear into the hearts of duplicate posts everywhere...! :P

Is that a rattle, rumble, grinding noise, or a screech?

With that kind of answer I should just say "well rebuild it then"

But being in a helpful mood you want a 6000 2RS bearing and to read this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=21076&p=267172&hilit=+6000+bearing#p267172

and this thread
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8633&hilit=6000+seal

and you want 3 of the man with the tiger's Viton 'O' rings

I'll try again... You never know you might be able to help me!

...What type of noise is it making?

It's a rumble.

Sorry, but did you try to remove the magnetic pick-up and try to spin the CAS wheel again?
It still sounds this could be a cheap fix :bonk:

Last fall I had my spare rebuilt by a local shop. I couldn't get it apart.
