Cheers Dave, sorry for the late reply, this evening was the local Mini gathering.
I ended up looking at this option as the Ashtray back box was damaged whilst trying to remove so I could fit a new A/C switch which now doubles as a boot release switch. However as you quite rightly state the size of sat navs these days are all larger than the opening left by the Ashtray, I still fancy doing this and after seeing how neat it can look I will perserver with trying to find something suitable.

Thanks for the piccy :)

Rob,

It may be worth getting an older type TomTom One (V3) from fleabay or similar - but get the one with an SD memory card slot.....

....that way you can download up to date maps for anywhere in the world....

...I use a Garmin because I'm a cheapskate - I can get maps for anywhere in the world for free!!! (which I can't get so easily for Angies TomTom 1).

I'm, also fairly sure that it would be possible to squeeze a wider unit in, but just needing a bit more surgery.
Dave

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

I don't understand the need for a SatNav these days.
I had a Garmin once but it would never update properly. I found my Android phone much more useful so after a year or so of disuse, somebody inherited my Garmin.

I always have it with me & also always have a car charge lead so if I need it unexpectedly, this is not a problem.
It updates by 3G/4G automatically.
The screen is the right shape (you usually go forward so surely you want to see further forwards than sideways?).
I don't use Google Maps. I found an app Called M8 which I like a lot more.

The only drawback was when I was using it to navigate for G UK & the map disappeared when I had an incoming call...from Enright! :-D

I have to agree with Rippers on this one (up to a point).

Whilst my phone integrates with my laptop for planning and storing routes, it isn't as 'user friendly' when on the move - mainly due to the fact that it isn't easily visible whilst driving (not mounted in car).

There is the obvious concern that if you are driving whilst using your mobile as a 'visible' satnav, then it could fall under the use of a mobile whilst driving and leave you open to questions from the Police - if you just leave it on the seat and listen to the directions, no such problems - but there is the temptation to 'just have a quick look' which could be illegal and, more importantly, dangerous....

...if it is in a proper mount, then no such issues.

On the positive side, my Garmin updates quickly and easily, and is very user friendly. :)

I like to be able to see what time I will get to my destination (maybe I'm sad, but I like it!)

I generally just keep it on the 'open map' setting without entering a route - so arguably it is unnecessary. :?

Either way, it's more useful than the ashtray :D

It was nice to have a SatNav when I was planning the route for last years Saturday Drive at Donington - using roads I didn't know, it is an easy process to make a map on Google Maps, and export it to the SatNav... (which didn't work in the end 'cos I took the red car with a basic TomTom which didn't import maps in that format :( )
