How do I "unSORN" my ELan?

Postby markv » Mon 17.03.2014, 14:40

I SORNed my car online a few months ago for the first time, and now want to re-tax it from 1st April. However, when I go to the online, the default start date for the tax disc is 1st March and there doesn't seem to be a way to specify I want to start on 1st April. Can anyone suggest how I can do this online before I actually get into April?

Thanks
Regards

I didn't think that it could be fine on line,I thought that you had to go to the post office with your details.

According to the FAQs it can be done online, and when I entered my details I got as far as the payment screen, but only with a 1st March date for the new tax disc

I think that there may be a date after which you may be able to have a disc issued for the 1st of April, think you might have to wait until closer to the month end I'm afraid.

I'm assuming that the cost is not adjusted downwards to compensate for the loss of time?

Mark I think the 15th of the month is of significance but if you leave it later at least you get the tax disc straight away at the post office ( while we still need them)

Thanks Dave

I tried today and it's still coming up March 1st.

Either way, online or at the post office, I'm planning to be at the Southern Meet at the Hen and Chicken on April 2nd :burnout:  :gathering:

I think I only let you go to the next month if its within 7 days....
if you do it on the 1st April get an email for proof.........ref number etc....
as of Oct there are no tax discs but in theory currently you should still display one....however back in the day there were many (its in the post) that gave excuses or didn't......if you have the ref number then you can prove to plod should you get tugged
Im reckoning that you could get away with it as it should be with you by the following week......

The law requires that you display a valid tax disk. If you have a visual inspection by the police and you haven't then they may choose to nick you, however, if you've bought on line then the computers the police use (with which they automatically check with DVLA from their cars) shouldn't flash any alarms and you're unlikely to get stopped.

Had to wait until the first of the month in previous years. Tried just after midnight and still couldn't so got up early. Displayed it when it dropped through the letterbox days later They have cameras everywhere to check you pay.

I went through the same thing at the beginning of March. I couldn't find a way of taxing the car in advance online from 1 March, so I went to the Post Office on 1 March. I don't know if they could have sold it before March. I suspect not.

I think that renewal is possible in the 2 weeks before expiry of the current disc, but not buying a new disc.

Thanks for all the responses - I think I'll pop into a post office instead to be on the safe side.

I think you can only Tax online a couple of days before the start of the new Month, otherwise it will default to the start of the Month.I think that applies at the PO aswell :?:

Yep, basically, you can rernew any timne after the 10th of the previous month, but if it's sorn, you have to wait for within 3 working days of when you want it to start. (Online or PO).

If you buy it online, there is no requirement to display it until it arrives (obviously you cant display something you dont have!), and you will not get any interest from Old Bill.

Easiest way is to do it at PO at the end of March (if you want to have a disc in the window), or just do it online and drive without the disc (which is actually just a visible receipt for the VED) until it arrives - all computer checks will show that the tax has been paid up from 1st April.

It does make sence to not allow people to buy it too early, otherwise a quick look at the car on (say) 20th Month could indicate that it is taxed when it isn't.

I wondered how long it would take for you to post on this thread & take a swipe at the silver fox? :-D
I don't think he has worked out the un-SORN process?

I would have taken a below the belt swipe at Dico many days ago but I've been sin binned for a couple of weeks. I was getting severe DWS (Dico Withdrawal Symptoms) and had to grovel to Geoff, via an e mail to Big Erch and JohnW, to be allowed back on

PS Does SORN stand for Saddleworth Off Road Numpties ;-)
