Turbo Banjos again

Postby epipete » Thu 24.04.2014, 18:26

Despite all the work I have carried out recently, New Samcos, new gear cables, etc, etc it seems that I still have a coolant leak, 2 in fact, the first is from a jubilee clip on the bottom hose/radiator connection, when I tighten the jubilee it tightens to a certain point and then 'snaps' loose again, I'm hoping that a new clip will sort this out; the other leak is more ominous and related to the top banjo bolt on the Turbo, (this being a fault I'd thought resolved with new banjos).

The problem I have is that, as with the above jubilee clip, when I tighten the banjo it tightens to a certain point and then 'snaps' loose again, being a new, albeit not OEM, jubilee bolt I fear that I'm back to fearing the turbo body is shot.

I can get a tight fit if I don't use two washers but not if I do, is there any thing I can use as a seal that is thinner than the two copper washers? Does anyone have any idea who and for how much a thread repair to the turbo might cost and does any one have either a spare good turbo or a bad turbo with a good cartridge?

Thanks

When you are desperate, i can get hold of a NEW OEM turbo for you.
Also a friend who has a new one now is refurbing his old, soon to be up for sale.

I think you have a good chance that the threat in your turbo can be restored, although i doubt it can be done in situ.
You cab then restore your own old turbo and sell it again to get some pennies back 8)

I agree, the turbo can be re threaded but, not in situ. Other options are to find an ebay turbo, RHB5 and just swap the exhaust housings. Then you can go either ball bearing or with a slightly larger turbo.

Sorry to hear that Pete but.... it's got to come out. If you can't catch a thread with the washers but you can without washers then you're only holding it on a few mm of thread and it is going to come out one day and even if you notice it and you don't trash the turbo then it is going to be at the most inopportune time. You can't risk it.

PS they're cheaper from China!

HJ2, thanks for your comment.

Marie, Geoff

Similarly, thanks for your advice, am I correct in my understanding that all RHB5 Turbos are the same and interchangeable, ie from the Isuzu Trooper/Opal Monteray/Holden Rodeo, as the one in our Lotus Elan?
