Replacement Door Mirrors Does anyone want any?

Postby Brit-Car-Nut » Tue 04.03.2014, 15:09

I keep seeing members asking for a source of replacement door mirrors but rarely see a definitive answer. Lotus used to sell the mirror with the heater backing but they were very expensive. Then, they sold a 2 piece kit: The heater base and a thin mirror. Now, they all appear to have gone obsolete.

Would there be any interest in a Group Buy of JUST the mirror piece(s)?

I have contacted the largest supplier of replacement door mirror glass in the US and they are willing to provide a quote for replacement mirrors and are used to dealing with car clubs who are sourcing a solution for obsolete and small-run production.

They offer :

•Safety-smooth seamed edges for safe handling
•First-surface chrome reduces headlight glare
•Protective and easily identifiable safety-orange packaging
•Mirror shape, part number and installation guide are printed on the box
•Includes RediStick OE-grade adhesive patches (where applicable).

I don't have a real idea as to the cost but I have some NEW mirrors I could send to them for a quote. I am hoping for something around $15.00 each for a flat mirror and maybe $25.00 each for a convex.

It would probably end up being a Master Group Buy then splitting into US Group, UK Group and ROW Group kind of deal with a different member handling the 3 different shipping scenarios.

They are able to get the heater bases made and they offer heater elements, but that would be a costly addition. I will ask for prices for all options.

I suspect there would be the FLAT (driver's side) mirror and the CONVEX (passenger side) mirror BUT WITHOUT the heated bases.

The convex mirror would NOT be etched with the "items in mirror are closer than appears" unless it is a requirement for the MOT. This also would add to the cost since it would create TWO different convex mirrors - one for RHD and a different one for LHD. We could also consider doing without the convex mirror altogether since the flat glass would fit either side? The convex glass is a LOT more expensive. Again, I don't know what MOT requires. In the US, only the driver's side is mandatory.

This is just a question to sample desire and possible demand. I hate lists as much as anyone, but could we start a list and members that would like to get replacement mirrors either for immediate use or to hoarde for future needs? The list would NOT be a commitment and the price will vary based on the quantity ordered, so right now, it is "I want a mirror for my car, IF I CAN AFFORD IT" kind of list.

Maybe this is not such a big demand item, but I figured I would ask...

As far as I know, they ALL had heated mirrors. There is only 1 part number for the control switch A100M6040F, so that is a clue.

All of the used and new mirror bodies I have scrounged have the 2 wires for the heaters as well. Maybe NA models didn't? Parts guide V.2 still lists the same switch.

The parts guide V.6 only shows a change with the introduction of the S2. No mention of a different part for the NA. The NA mirror housings were always Black if I read other posts correctly whereas the SE/S2 mirrors were painted to match the body colour. In V.6, the replacement mirror glass options were all listed under "Mirror Glass, Heated"

Common sense takes a while to sink in, so RATHER THAN DUPLICATE THE LIST a gazillion times, just post a request and I will update THIS single list.

Hi John
What is the heated part of the door mirror glass ?
The black plastic on the rear of the glass which holds the metal cross pivot and the other pivots is that the heated part ?
because a couple of the lugs holding the cross piece have broken on mine .
I need to figure it out before adding my name to your list.

I need to tear one apart but I believe there are 3 parts: the glass, the heater and then the carrier. It is a shame we don't know what car Lotus borrowed the mirrors from, but they don't match any US GM cars I dug through in the breaker yards. Someone mentioned Citroen, but that seems to be a bit of a stretch.

I guess it is time for more pictures...

For now, I will put you down for a complete assembly and maybe one convex?

I found 10 complete NEW A100U0204F "Mirror Glass, Heated, Flat" from an OLD US Lotus Dealer. These have the plastic backing, the heater element with the 2 electrical posts in the backing and a flat mirror glass. The cost to me is around $40.00 (£25.00) after inbound shipping. Priority Mail shipping to you would add $30.00 (£19.00) to the total so around $70.00 or £44.00 or so, if you are interested. I don't know what DVB would charge, but I would think it would be at least around that much for a used assembly?

They have a couple of the LHD RIGHT SIDE Convex mirrors with the wording available for $75.00 including inbound shipping.

If anyone is interested, I can make arrangements to get a few (or more) and post them on to you. Probably takes close to 2 weeks for all of the posting and shipping...

Just thought I would throw that out there. When they are gone, they are never to be found again.

Does that mean you want me to put you down for a flat or convex mirror glass or both or you want one of the complete last mirror subassemblies?

My LH carrier plate (with the lugs that hold the adjuster pins) is messed up, I will take one of those assemblies. Thanks for digging those up.

Here is a picture of the backside of the mirror plate. The heater connections are noted. The mirror company will have the sample early next week and I will be able to quote some firm prices then

If you have a broken back plate, buying an original replacement mirror would be a wise investment. If you can find a used mirror with a broken glass, the chances are that the backing plate might be unbroken so could be used by replacing the mirror glass.

The switch to turn on the mirror's heater timer is on the mirror control switch.

Hi John
Thanks for the pics etc.
It is the backs I require and I have managed to find one and have the possibility of another so would you scratch me from the list for now until I am more sure of my requirements.
Cheers

I'd like two mirror glasses please. I am not sure whether the UK cars are included in this but if so, same as Novacaine I guess.

Since there was no real response, I never bothered to post the prices that were quoted:

The SMALLEST order is 25 pieces. I factored in their one time charge for set-up.

The plain flat glass and plain convex glass seem to be possible to raise at least 25 orders each but 25 of lh and 25 of rh etched glass might be a stretch.

These are all Glass Only replacement mirrors:

Flat Glass is $13.00 each + postage These would fit EITHER side

Convex Glass (no etching) is $15.00 each + postage These would fit EITHER side

Convex Glass (with etching) is $17.00 each. Left hand and right hand versions are available.

So, someone wanting a spare flat glass mirror (for the driver's side) and a spare convex glass mirror (for the passenger (near) side) would be $28.00 or approx 18.00 + postage

I expect postage for one set of mirror glass shipped by USPS Priority Mail to the US around $6.00 per pair and to the UK around $25.00 per pair. For the UK, a bulk package to the UK and re-distribution might be less expensive

Since there was little reaction to the original offer, I told them I didn't expect an order very quickly.

Anyone interested can contact me via email (icon on the left under my ID) and I will add them to the "thinking" list.
