Tiny holes in spark plug area, what are they for?

Postby HJ2 » Wed 11.06.2014, 12:00

Dear colleages,

On a friend's car i noticed a little hole in the upper corner of eacht recess where the 2 sets of spark plugs go.
These look ike drain holes to me, to ged rid of ingressed water or oil under the spark plug cover, but this means that the holes should have a connection to the outer world somewhere.

Anyone know what i am talking about?

Reason i ask is because the car had a lot of oil in the recess on the belt side. I immidiately thought: "cam cover seal bad". But then i saw the little hole an wondered if it could be a source of oil leaking as well.
I cleaned everything now so i can see better where the oil comes from.

My spark plug cover is off so I just took a look - no holes.

..."in the upper corner of eacht recess where the 2 sets of spark plugs go" - so they're on the inside walls of the cam cover?

I'm guessing he means these? (this is from an Isuzu Imark, same design just smooth with the oil filler at the rear as it was mounted in-line) and if you think it would look cool on your elan all polished up its for sale: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/calg ... nFlag=true

Those are the bolt holes for the bolts to secure the inside perimeter of the cam cover, so...while I wouldn't anticipate that HJ2 was referring to those, if he was it would explain the oil in the spark plug recess if his friends car was absent those bolts.

Precisely, which is why I hope those aren't the ones ! EDIT I looked at my Impulse RS valve cover and I believe he is talking about these below, in which case they are for the plastic plug wire routing clips:

Hahaha!

Nope 2x wrong
When i tried to take a picture on my car... They weren't there!
So only on my friend's car... I will take a picture when he is in again 8)

In the first picture the hole is located at the lower left yellow arrow, but in the vertical plane in the corner! (or else it would have no affect as a drainhole as per suggetion :poke: )

Here it is, in the vertical plane (you can barely see it).... And it's on the opposite side as well!
