Wrong water-pump. ...warum?!

Hello all,

My garage (Lotus expert in Vienna) simply refused to install the new spare water-pump I was providing claiming it was not the right one.
Here is why, with some photos to show the difference between the old pump and the new one (see 'toothed wheel'):

The water-pump removed from the car fits perfectly right with the new cambelt shape

The tooth's shape is round just like the cambelt ones

the tooth shape of the new pump clearly were square, not round (sorry the photo is really poor)

See how square teeth are.

By the way, the new spare water-pump looks quite similar to the pump shown in wikiLEC related topic...

So, is there someone to tell me what the story is and who's right: LEC or my garage ? or have I missed something such as 2 options exist depending year of make for instance...?

Interesting Frank. That's Dave Speck's photograph of a Beck/Arnley pump. Rockauto clearly show two types of tooth - the B/A one is like yours and Dave's whereas the Bosch one looks right to me and I would tend to agree with your garage about fitting it.

BTW there were issues with water pumps about 5 years ago but not this aspect.

Having seen this I've checked my 'spare' new one - and it also has the more square teeth

When the rain stops for long enough (probably next March ) I'll have a look at the one fitted to my spare engine and see what that one has - I don't remember checking the teeth when i fitted it a few years ago - if it has the 'square' teeth, at least we'll know that it should work for at least 15k miles (as that is how much it did before I changed the engines over).......

...... now thinking that I should buy a Gates one from Rock Auto, but although it's only £16 to buy, it's nearly £40 to post - still, it's gonna be cheaper than a catastrophic failure if I fit the wrong bit....

Based on photos shown, I agree with you that the Bosch one looks indeed the closest one to the water-pump removed from my car.

I have had the same problems with the Dayco WP169K1A kit.... bought the kit through "Rocks" + postage + UK import tax... on the basis that everything should be "compatible".... kit contains correct belt BUT wrong pump... have posted this under Water Pump and Cambelt too in the hope that people will be "checking" water pumps very carefully. Dont want to risk it on my low miler...

I've just looked at my kit from Rock. It has 99-1K7 stamped on it and has the square teeth.
The box shows the part number A55-73619. The belt is correct - ie. rounded.
I have a spare engine with about 3K miles on it. I've had it for about 10 years. I don't
suppose the water pump will have deteriorated??

Has anyone tried to get Rock to exchange the pump?
Any comments gratefully received.

PS. I've had the kit for about 7 years. I've had a long running fight with cancer and am just getting round to playing with
the car.

For information, I have a Rock Auto Dayco Timing Belt Water Pump Kit No. WP169K1A: Water Pump (140-1320) & Timing Belt (95169) and they are a perfect fit as per Franck's first photo, phew!

HAVE A REALLY CAREFUL LOOK AT THAT DAYCO SUPPLIED WATER PUMP (for a FULLY U (half round) shape between the drive cog teeth) WITH A BACKLIGHT and also MATCH IT TO THE CAMBELT....

I suggest that you Get onto Dayco using the E-Mail contacts that I have recently posted on here under "Dayco Cambelts and Water Pumps" you will also find that I have placed other comments about "Rock Auto's" under "SERVICE".... Rock Auto's see it as a Dayco problem if you have a wrong pump.
