waste gate

Postby andy b » Sun 28.09.2014, 17:38

The turbo Sink theory. Very good.
My question I must admit i love the élan the performance is brill i keep reading about the wastage operation the élan pulls so well i never hear the wastage dumping It is prob as i never feel the need to drive it flat out. I am about to put it away for the winter as i have just finished getting a S3 turbo esprit i bought of ebay and i want to try it out and the élan could do with some TLC. Right back to the plot how hard do i push the élan to get it to operate the waste gate what should i see on the boost gauge i want to see if it is working before i put it away as i can un stick it as one of the jobs over the winter.

If you can't fix it with a hammer it's electrical.

The waste gate should open once you hit a boost of 0.5 if your car is standard of course, if you have a mountain chip then i believe it is 0.95ish. There are other upgrades that can cause the boost to creep though (e.g larger bore exhaust).

The best way to check if it is stuck is using some mole grips on the actuator rod. If it move freely its fine, if it doesn't then its stuck :-D

Andy
Standard max boost on an unchipped Elan is 0.65bar, so if your gauge is accurate is should go just beyond the 0.5 mark on the dial.
As novocaine says a chipped Elan will take you to 0.9+ a bit depending on the chip.

reading your post, I wonder ? are you confusing waste gate with a dump valve ?
The Elan doesn't have a dump valve, i.e. you will not "hear" the dumping your listening for -- and you'll not hear the WG operating as it exits into the same pipe as the turbine -- stick a separate screamer pipe onto the WG outlet - you,ll soon hear that :)
