What Power Steering Fluid?

Despite looking through the listings under 'vital fluids' there seems to be little or nothing about what Power Steering Fluid is proscribed!

Is there a generic fluid that can be used or something more specific, please?

Assume you mean prescribed
"use ONLY the approved fluid – Nippon Oils 'Besco A T F Dexron' available from your Lotus dealer under part number A100E6088V"

Any ATF marked DEXRON (but maybe NOT Dexron II or 2) is correct. This was used in mostly GM cars through the '90s before synthetics got to more popular. Early Ford used a different type ATF which was designated as Type F.

Just wondering, why not Dexron II or 2. I think I may have put that in mine, should I panic ? If I need to change it now would be a good moment as car is in the garage for the winter so Im looking for little jobs to do on the cold concrete floor.

Steve: GM's Dexron / Dexron2/II is correct for the power steering. You should have no issues.

Ford and Chrysler use a different type fluid (Type F) that will cause problems. That is probably more of a concern in the US, but Fords are common in the UK too.

Thanks for clarifying the issue. I did some further research ( wiki ) on Dextron, very clear now. I had assumed by the statement " probably not Dextron 2 " that I needed Dextron 1. That apparently used sperm whale oil ! and is surprisingly not available now. Dextron 2 was hydroscopic so not very good. Dextron 2 was improved, it's complicated. Seems its almost impossible to get the wrong stuff now. what now puzzles me is what it's in the bottle of power steering fluid on my garage shelf ? No Dextron number just says power steering fluid. I don't think it's in the Elan though so probably not a problem.

I have removed the RH drive shaft to replace CV boots and wheel bearing. Now would be a good time to change the PAS fluid since I can easily get at the pipework on the rack. The fluid hasn't been changed for many years and it is overdue.

Was the old Dexron III a mineral based oil? Is Dexron VI also mineral or is it synthetic? If the system is drained at the high and low pressure pipes at the rack can I safely use Dexron VI?

I bought a litre of ATF fluid this morning. I asked for Dexron III and was told this was it. When I did a search I find it is synthetic and actually Dexron VI. The data sheet states it is suitable for use where GM Dexron IIIG is recommended. I'm not sure about this stuff, maybe it's all right. Has anybody any thoughts on this?

you want bog standard red ATF. From the data sheet it look like what you have - it says suitable for Dexron 111 and not DexronV1 at the end

stuff thats in my car is red. i never came across blue PAS fluid
