Can the power steering pump

Hi can I take the power steering pump out through top of engine bay ,, thanksToby

Yes you can.. Though I got my garage to do it a few years back, when my experience in the elan was limited, but now I would do it myself. I also changed the two pipes which run from the rack. Got them made up from a specialist, about £50 quid.

Hi Toby,

My car is in the garage for a number of mods and repairs and one of them is the power steering pump. Fortunately / unfortunately?? my clutch needs replacing so my mechanic had originally told me that he was going to drop the engine to swap the pump over so he'll now do the clutch at the same time. I'm not sure what anyone else thinks about the best way though.........?

Hi John that makes more sense ,looking at it it wont come out through the top so I read the manual it says to remove through bottom so made a start, and logically this is the way, Thanks for you Reply Tony

Yes come comfortably out through the bottom ,easier than first thought as Lotus manual says preferred way is to remove clam

i'm fairly sure that I've read on here that the PAS pump CAN'T come out via the top but I can't find the reference to this

I've only ever taken it out from the bottom - even with the exhaust manifold, turbo and exhaust pipes out of the way, there isn't enough room to remove it with the clam in situ.

Hi I found the last couple of answers correct ,
I started off changing the front pipe on the exhaust,the studs on one broke so decided to take off the bottle part of exhaust ,and found the steering pump had to go also.
Got this off and out the way ,then broke a stud on the turbo
This had to be removed this was reasonably straightforward
That's where I'm at ,going to order some stud bolts from Sj,s today and start reassembly

Yes can do without,but it went straight through mot a week or so before,so guess it was on its way then.the only + is I am cleaning up behind and a general clean below,it's not to bad in all honesty

You don't need to take the engine out.
