Idle control valve

Anybody fitted one of these and or knows where it goes.

Might also be called I.A.C, possible part number A100E6505S

Also what exactly does it do.

The ECU uses it to adjust the idle RPM so that it will run properly whether hot or cold. You can just reach it and undo the mounting screws by reaching into the back-right of the engine block as you look from the front. I think it is obscured by the ignition leads.

Why do you need to replace it?

6 months ago had a problem and Sinclaires took it out and cleaned it and the problem went away.

Problem is back again where the tick over is 1200/1300 rpm and goes up to 2000 when stopping, even after an hours drive, as if the car is still cold.

So thought it would be easier just to replace this part first.

make sure it's not a bad CTS (coolant temp sensor) -- that could cause idle probs too.

Agreed.

Also, check the integrity of the seal that blanks off one of the vacuum pipes at the rear of the plenum (next to the one that controls the heater selection - small bore rubber hose with a right angle outlet, unless it's been removed and the hose goes on directly).
Take the blank off and the revs should rise to ~2000.

Doug, I'm sure the CTS was changed last time as I had a spare and problem was still there.

Sy, I have had that problem before with the right angle pipe perishing, so the pipe was just pushed straight on without it. Will check to make sure it hasn't come off, but that was 2000rpm all the time if I remember.
